Rose has just woken up from the first sleep of the day, well ahead of Lily, who dragged herself out of the puppy crate and into the bed by the window for a few more zzzzzs. I put Rose out for a moment, turned my back to check on Lily, then discovered that Rose had found something to play with on the patio - and it wasn't one of their toys. No, Rose had decided that she would have a bit of fun playing with a bumble bee and had it pinned down under her front paws. This is not a good idea Rose, you could have been stung. I quickly scooped Rose up and put the bee out of it's misery and then I had a panic because I remember being stung by a dead bee (or was it a wasp?) that was on the windowsill, when I was a little girl, so I thought, 'Where's the sting? Have a cleared it all up?' So we had a good brush round to try to get rid of all left over bits of the bee and, hopefully it no longer presents a danger.
Please don't think that I am usually cruel to bees, because I'm not. I actually quite like bees and can see the point of them, unlike wasps, who I think just exist to annoy us and spoil our summer picnics.
On another note - I know that bee stings can be very harmful to humans who are allergic to them. Does this apply to puppies also? (Are you there Dr H? You may know the answer to this!)
The puppies are on the breakfast room step now and are playing quite nicely alongside each other. If they were human toddlers it would be known as 'parallel play' because they're not actually playing together, just playing their own games quite happily next to each other. (Just as I wrote that, Lily decided to eat Rose's ears and try to knock her off the step!)
We had an interesting moment a few minutes ago, when a rather ancient black labrador stopped at the end of the drive (presumably his owner was at the other end of the lead, but I couldn't see him) and there was a bit of a staring contest going on between him and the pups. They sat bolt upright, ears pricked and stared him right down!! Good girls! When we get to the party tonight remember, this is what Milo Schmilo will look like in a few years - nothing to be afraid of is there?
