I thought I would give my mum a surprise by ringing her during the day. It normally takes her a while to get to the phone before she answers and then she has to turn the volume up because she doesn't hear very well, so you can usually be making a cup of tea in between dialling and actually hearing her speak. When she does answer, it's always a bit tentative as though she's not sure she really wants to have this conversation or she suspects you of being some telemarketing person from a call centre in India.
Anyway today was different! The phone was answered immediately and there was Mum's cheery little voice saying, 'Hello there!' in a sort of, "I'm really pleased to be speaking to you,' sort of bubbly sort of way.
'Hello Mum, how are you?' I said in a similar cheery voice.
'Oh it's YOU!' she replied, clearly devastated, 'I thought it was going to be your brother! BUT NEVER MIND.'
WELL, THANKS A LOT MUM!
(And she couldn't get rid of me quick enough just in case HE was trying to ring while she was being forced against her will to speak to her eldest daughter!)
(Oh, AND she called me 'Helen' just for good measure!)
Grrrrrrrrrr!!
