I had a bit of a migraine this morning, so haven't been posting much.
I've had migraines for years, but not very frequently, and I have learned to control them pretty much so that they're nowhere near as debilitating as they used to be.
The first time I had one, I actually thought I had a brain tumour or something. I can clearly remember reading a bedtime story to Christina (she was about two at the time) and not being able to read the words because of the distorted vision, then my speech went and finally my fingers and toes down one side of my body went completely numb. This was the pattern for years, and each 'attack' followed the same sequence, but strangely I never suffered from the severe headaches that are usually associated with migraine. When it was over I would just feel really hungover and have problems with spatial awareness for a couple of hours, so couldn't drive.
But they have become less severe over the years and now, as soon as I recognise that it's happening, I just take a couple of painkillers and sit quietly and, thankfully, it passes without going through the other stages.
I know that my migraines are all triggered by light conditions. Sunlight flickering through trees, candle light, the angle of the autumn sun are all possible triggers, and it would be the latter one that did it this morning. I'd been sitting at the breakfast room window with the sunlight streaming right across my line of vision and, hey presto, migraine alert!
Thankfully I don't have diet related migraines. It would be an awful pain having to watch what I ate for fear of setting one off. It's just as well really, because I'm sure that some of the main culprits are ice cream and strawberries and I've just eaten a huge bowl of both! (After the migraine had gone) Not that I particularly like ice cream, but I had bought some Ben and Jerry's Baked Alaska - vanilla ice cream with marshmallows and white chocolate polar bears - actually at the request of James - and I just couldn't wait to try it. It was rather delicious and I enjoyed it very much. Sorry James!!
