...to all those people in Workington and Cockermouth who have been affected by the appalling floods. The news footage shows the devastating effects of all that rainfall and I can only try to imagine how people are feeling right now.
My family lived in Workington for a while, so I know the area. It's never had a lot going for it, being situated on the wrong side of the Lake District and certainly used to give me the impression of being a bit tired and behind the times. I can only hope that the area is given the fullest possible support to help it recover.
The saddest thing about it all is that a policeman was swept away when one of the bridges on the outskirts of Workington collapsed.
Based on the experience of the residents of Morpeth and Rothbury following last year's flood it's going to be a long time before normal life resumes.
