i have just TRIED to take the pups out for a walk.
We got as far as the end of the road which must be 20 yards. They saw another dog across the road and went absolutely berserk, culminating in a stand up fight between themselves, totally unable to respond to any command from me and completely out of control and that was the end of the walk.
Brought them home, me in tears of frustration, don't even want to be near them just now.
Don't know what to do.

I know I've not been too serious in the past but this needs serious attention evidently. So, what I would do:
ReplyDelete"Start by doing what's necessary;
then do what's possible;
and suddenly you are doing the impossible."
St Francis of A
1. Take a deep breath, watch news footage of the Haiti tragedy for fresh perspective and then START AGAIN!
2. Hold the snout and smack whichever one is creating, very hard on the hind quarters and crate her....EVERY TIME! Shout if necessary. In fact shout in any case, it'll take her by surprise to see mummy so ****ing angry for once. She needs to know who's boss. They do need to fear you. Give no quarter!
3. "He who spareth the rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him correcteth him betimes" (Proverbs 13:24)
Lower my expectations. They're not children, they're dogs (and naughty ones at that - it doesn't have to be that way) Remember I'm not a teacher and I don't have to measure impact negative or otherwise. Nor do I have to hit targets. There is no OfDog! Noone sitting observing at the back of the kitchen...no more performance management...just dictatorship....and softly softly ......ok so they're not monkeys either but you get my drift?
3. Forget the dirty coats, the natural odour and the mess for a while, they're not lap dogs or Louis Vuitton Handbag dogs
4. Go out and leave the little b***ers to fight it out
5. Have a large glass of whatever's available
6. Go to Noo Yawk when the time comes and the Hell with them dawgs, they'll appreciate you on your return
5. With love and patience ...nothing is impossible. Don't take on so
Thank you Chris.
ReplyDeleteCertainly shouting at them has had a huge impact today. I rarely do it, so you're right to say it will make an impact. They KNOW they're in serious trouble and haven't murmured or moved from their beds since their tongue lashing.
I'm never sure about a smack - but will absolutely resort to it if necessary.
I know we can do this, but it just seems such a huge task at the moment. Anyway, I've finished sobbing and have put new make up on, so in a few minutes I'll go through and see them.
I shall keep re-reading your comment to help me keep things in perspective!
