... Went to the British Consulate in New York this morning. Got there for bang on opening time - 9am. 10 people had been signed in before us. Up to 9th floor. Mayhem!
One poor female member of consulate staff on duty in corridor! It took her an hour to deal with the people ahead of us. We knew MORE about 'the situation' than she did. All they did was make a note of names, passport numbers and contact telephone numbers!
She gave us a web address to register at BUT the website constantly CRASHES...
I did manage to get her e-mail address though - so it will be easier to keep in contact rather than trekking 25 blocks across town and waiting in a HUGE queue. By the time we were dealt with, the queue of people was at least 30 people @ 10 per hour work that one out!
Current news is starting to sound more positive. We ARE booked on the first available flight out - Wed 28th April BUT we are expecting some prioritised 'standby' flights before that date as it would seem that 'education' staff are being prioritised...
The meal @ Becco last night was truly amazing.
James told me that Chris Moyles is stuck in New York as well - so I've 'tweeted' him to see IF he fancies meeting up this afternoon to watch the Plymouth v Newcastle game! Watch this space! I suspect pigs will fly first. Now that is a thought...
Sue and Jim are both a little 'down' today. I suspect in Sue's case this could be mild 'hangover' due to the two bottles of fruity Italian white wine we shared with our meal last night. You should have seen the size of the steak she put away! Needed a bit of washing down!
We managed to pick up a second 'hand luggage' sized case this morning a couple of blocks from the hotel to make sure we don't have another farce at JFK 'check-in' when we eventually get out of here! Last Friday's abortive 'standby' escape found us face to face with a real 'jobsworth' of a check-in girl (well old lady really)! Made us take stuff out of Sue's overweight bag. Easily managed by removing a handbag and several shoes/boots and a couple of books. I though Sue was going to 'deck' her at one point!
Anyway that's me for now. Jim wants a turn - facebooking his mates etc...!
