Just being consistent here then...
Northumberland in their infinitely consistent wisdom are giving 3 options for ALL staff who are caught up in this volcanic ash situation:-
IF on flexitime them can make up lost hours over next 3 months.
IF holiday entitlement is due then UP TO 5 days can be used.
ALL OTHER staff - including me - UNPAID LEAVE...
I might argue that I've built up an enormous amount of flexi time over the 25 years and a bit that I've worked for Northumberland. My 'working week' has varied from 40 to 70+ hours per week for over 25 years now. Of course I recognise that I didn't 'legally' need to work those hours BUT it is what it takes to run a school. Legally the hours of the working week for teachers is about 32.5 hours per week and then there are the hours more that nearly every teacher does at home on top of that. The 40-70 I mention are actually spent at school! I've not added the homeworking hours NOR have I added the time spent in school during HOLIDAYS either!
Nice for my employers to take the opportunity to give some 'payback'. I suppose it is times like these when an employer really shows their employees how much they mean to them. Clearly in the case of Northumberland we are all purely numbers!
My loyalty to them is going to disappear now. It is treatment like this that can turn people into 'jobsworths'!
I suppose that's another 'unexpected expense' I'll have to try to claim back from either insurers or BA!
Now just considering the 'fairness' of this decision...
Each person affected is going to be affected in a different way for a time that is NOT determined by them! Ummm.
OK rant over. I'll pick this little one up again in a BIG way once I return. I can see the unions having a field day with it!

I'm not often lost for words Charles...but Northumberland CC's decision is simply ill conceived, crass and absolutely breathtaking. Reading your philosophy of life last night which I completely understand I can only think that they don't mean you. What if those decision makers had been similarly stranded eh? Lear jets? Unpaid leave?
ReplyDeleteBut it cuts both ways doesn't it? My old nan said similarly... "You give where you get" They really do not care. Not really. Not deep down.
"We're here for you" ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Exactly where is that though?
