Young At Heart

LILY & ROSE

Here are some photos of Lily & Rose. There are a few from the first time we saw them when they were just 4 weeks old. They would fit on your hand at this age and didn't look much like westies!

LOW NEWTON

That's where we've been today. Not exactly beach weather as in sunbathing and soaking up the rays (Not that I could do that at the moment, unless I wrapped my head in a dark cloth or something) but in a 'promenading' sort of way.

We left the girls at home for a good sleep and set off with Hannah, Jake and James for a late morning stroll, followed by lunch at The Ship. Very basic menu - but really nice, homely food. No pudding to speak of, so our next stop was the ice cream farm near Warkworth.

Got home and lazed about a bit while our lunch slowly digested, before we have to think about the next meal which is to be an Indian takeaway later this evening!

(Don't want to get on the scales. In fact may have to throw them away!)

PROJECTILE DIARRHOEA

We were having a lovely time at the beach at Warkworth.
The girls were bounding in and out of the sea, occasionally having little drinks but stopping when we told them it would make them poorly.

Unfortunately, we weren't quick enough with this advice, because half an hour into our walk Lily literally exploded from her bottom with a jet stream of liquid the like of which you had to see to believe. This happened another two times - and then Rose was similarly afflicted.

In between these horrific expulsions, the girls were fine and walked along without a care in the world.

However, since we got home, they have only wanted to sleep, which is most unusual. They had their tea and ate with gusto, but apart from that they've been very quiet and clearly out of sorts all afternoon.

Did the ingestion of sea water cause this, or is there some other problem? We'll be watching them very carefully and will take them straight to the vet in the morning if they're no better.

BACK TO SQUARE ONE

Am suffering this morning.

The eye is killing. very sore and teary again.

fed up now.

IS THIS PROGRESS?

For the first time in a week I've managed to watch TV this evening without having to hold my hand over my left eye to shade it from the light!! No kidding, it's really been that bad.

But, as I say, I've actually felt relatively comfortable while watching best of Mock the Week.

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end of the pesky little virus.

Everyone here has turned in for the night. We're planning a number of possible activities for tomorrow. If the weather's good we'll go to Warkworth and the beach (with the dogs) calling at Amble for fish and chips and the ice cream farm (for ice cream!!) then going to the village pub in the evening. Or we might decide to go to Ingram Valley (with the dogs) and have lunch in Wooler. If it's not so nice, we'll go to Cragside (with the dogs) where at least we can spend time in the house (Not the dogs).

As you can see, we're planning on taking the dogs wherever we end up going.

(On Saturday Hannah and Jake are driving up from Yorkshire for the day, James is coming round and hopefully we're off to Newton by the Sea (with the dogs) for the day. I can't remember the name of the pub on the green there - but it's amazing and we intend to enjoy it!)

THEN AGAIN...

...maybe they didn't say 'style' - maybe they actually said - 'You've got a STY!' (I WAS getting my meds for my eye, so maybe that's what they thought was wrong with me)

STYLE!!

Apparently I have STYLE!

This is according to two of the women who work in the pharmacy at the RVI!

Of course, they could have been taking the Mick, but they came over to me while I was waiting for my prescription, and said they'd noticed me last week and really 'like my style!'

For your information, my STYLE today (and presumably last week as well) is chunky boots, three-quarter length combats, pale pink vest top and slouchy jacket, all topped off by my favourite brown butcher's boy cap.

So, if you also want STYLE you know what you should be wearing now don't you!!

(Sadly, I took this as an amazing compliment and walked out of the pharmacy feeling like a million dollars, but then I thought, 'Maybe they say this to all the patients to give them a little self-esteem boost!')

HERE WE GO AGAIN!!

So, having been informed last week that my eye was free of ulcers and the virus had cleared up, I'm told today that, in fact, the virus is still 'aggressively active' and that I was right to go in today and not to leave it over the weekend as it would have been 'dangerous' to do so.

I saw the third dofferent consultant this morning - a woman this time (Hindu, very nice woman, wanted to pick my brains as an ex-headteacher about how to choose a good school for her 5 year old!!) - but she DID spend more time listening to me and actually examining the eye than both the previous two put together.

I explained that any light (even the light transmitted from the TV) causes real pain, and when she looked at the eye she said she wasn't surprised at my discomfort.

So, I'm back on the meds and have to return to casualty next week.

For the next visit, we have really got to get our game plan sorted out. We thought that turning up at 8.30 would be ideal as that is when the clinic actully opens. However, those in the know got there at 8am (21 of them did anyway, as I was number 22) and were then prepared to sit and wait until the doctors arrived at 9.00. By the time we got there today there was already at least a one and a half hour wait.

Fortunately, Helen and Bill have gone off to do their own thing today. I think they've gone to Alnwick Castle, so I don't feel too bad about ruining the day for them.

As for the girls. Lily is a bit off her food at the moment. She was quite sick last night and then had a bit of a panic attack when the fire alarm kept going off while I was cooking dinner. (It's the flaming Yorkshire puddings that set it off every time - not that they're burned, it just seems to be ultra-sensitive to the hot fat) Poor Lily was actually trembling with fear and it took four of us to get her to calm down and relax. I felt so sorry for her as she's usually the brave, laid-back one who takes everything in her stride.

Rose, you'll be delighted to know, is not at all off her food, and is making the most of Lily's misfortune, by scoffing her's as well.

LEAVING LILY AND ROSE...

... with helen and Bill for a while this morning, while Charles and I go for a jolly jaunt to...

....EYE CASUALTY AGAIN!

LILY AND ROSE

Just thought I'd better mention Lily and Rose as this blog is,of course, mostly about them with a bit of other random stuff thown in from time to time.
The pups have had a fabulous day today. They've trotted around Belsay Gardens, sniffing at the flower beds, hiding under the ferns and rhododendrons, climbing up and down the steps to the house and castle, tiptoeing through the quarry garden where they were dwarved by the gigantic and almost tropical planting. They've walked for miles and have enjoyed every minute of it!
And it goes without saying that we've also walked miles today! We needed to build up our strength by having lunch in the Blacksmith's Cafe, which was delicious, but since the last time we were there, although it has been extended, they've tried to cram far too many tables in, resulting in everything being rather too cramped and a bit uncomfortable.
After that we drove home via Rothbury, where we stopped to admire the shops. (!) It's like stepping back in time thirty years really, although Bill reckons that this is what life should be like as opposed to the break-neck, high-fashion, credit-based society we unfortunately live in in the real world.

WE'RE OFF TO...

... Belsay Hall today.
Haven't been there for a while, but it used to be one of our favourite venues.
We'll take the dogs as they are allowed in the gardens.
I THINK Stella Macartney's Crystal Horse is back on display in the castle, so that'll be worth another look.
Also the tearoom at the entrance to the grounds is one of the best in the area, so that will be our lunch stop!

WILL THERE EVER BE A TIME...

... WHEN ALL FOUR OF US (HELEN, BILL, CHARLES AND ME) ARE AWAKE AT THE SAME TIME?

It's looking unlikely at the moment! I've been trying to drum up some interest in going out this afternoon, but no sooner do I suggest it than someone nods off again! Maybe they all need a few days to get school out of their systems, and then they might be a bit more lively.

HELEN GOT UP FIRST TODAY...

... She may think twice about this in future, as I wandered through to find her underneath a bundle of pups who were delightedly welcoming her with frantic licks and nibbles, while all she wanted them to do was to get outside for morning ablutions!!

After a few minutes of watching her run outside in an attempt to get them to follow her out for that purpose during which she quickly came to the conclusion that they are indeed faster than she is and that they would beat her back inside every time, I eventually put her out of her misery by calling time on the silliness. Fortunately, order was eventually restored, ablutions sorted and everyone happily welcomed the start of the day in a slightly more dignified manner.

We've had a very relaxed morning, just wandering around Morpeth, visiting the Chantry Craft Centre and drinking coffee. After a light lunch, everyone is now lounging around reading and dozing before we start to think about getting ready for dinner at Marabini's where we are meeting James and Claire this evening.

(Has Sol passed his medical then? Is this a good move by NUFC? How old IS he actually?)

HAVEN'T MENTIONED...

... THE GIRLS TODAY!!

Hopefully, they will be absolutely fine, but...

... having been left on their own in the utility room for five minutes with a sack of potatoes, which they managed to tear apart and gnaw away at at least one of the spuds, they may very well have serious tummy ache later on tonight.

They've had a funny old day today. They've been left on their own for quite a lot of the time and have then craved attention when we've returned from our jaunts. They're getting used to having Helen and Bill around and have seen Christina and James come and go.

Hopefully tomorrow we're going to take them out with us somewhere. They seem to have recovered from their coughs and colds, so should benefit from a good runabout. Maybe the beach, or possibly up to Ingram Valley if the weather holds up.

FORGOT TO MENTION...

... the incredible deep-fried courgette flowers in tempura batter that accompanied the duck.
Sounds gross - but was actually fabulous!

WOW!!

If you fancy a really special lunch (or afternoon tea, or indeed any meal) get along to the Jesmond Dene House Hotel.

We have just returned from lunch, having had the most fabulous meal without feeling over full. Perfectly cooked and delicious. My choice: crab ravioli with grapefruit jelly and lemongrass foam, roast (beautifully pink) duck with fondant potatoes and garden veg, incredible pineapple ice cream, apricot sorbet and chocolate mousseline in a fragile (edible)sugsr cylinder, petit fours and coffee. Wonderful!

Good company and excellent service topped off an incredible meal.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHRISTINA!!

It was thirty years ago today...!

What a lovely little scrap she was! I'd had a thing about oranges while I was pregnant, and we fully expected her to be born with 'Outspan' stamped all over her. She wasn't, of course, but had none of the wrinkly skin that newborns usually have and was lovely and smooth and glowing. (Unlike James who took weeks to grow into HIS skin and who Charles nicknamed ET!!)

We were living in Oxfordshire thirty years ago and, despite her very traumatic delivery (forceps and ventouse because she was the wrong way round)we left hospital two days later and my Mum came to help out for a week. I honestly don't know how we'd have got through those early days without her. What a shock to the system it was. I don't think anything fully prepares you for a) the birth and b) the change to your lifestyle.
Of course, at this point I should be telling you about my Mum, my brother and the pork chop in his shirt, as this story is very closely linked to Christina' arrival, but that will have to wait as I'm rushing to the hairdressers to have a quick trim, before Helen and Bill arrive and we all go off to Jesmond Dene House for lunch.

ITS OKAY! I'M STILL HERE!!

Just had another of those manic days where you don't get a chance to draw breath!

And yet - when I look at what I've achieved, it doesn't appear to be that much!

Mind you, I'll think twice befire making flaming fondant fancies again. What a faff THEY are. (Actually, it won't be that long, because I've only iced ten ready for tomorrow - and I've got anothet twenty or so sponge squares just waiting to be enrobed.

The thing is, getting the fondant icing to drape smoothly down the sides without leaving a trail of unsightly crumbs. The solution to this? First a thing layer of buttercream along the sides and the top, with an extra spoonful to make the dome. Then the thinnest layer of fondant paste wrapped round the sides and over the top, all smoothed together to leave a perfect base for the fondant icing, which then drips all over the shop until it finally comes to rest leaving perfect little cakes! They really do look good, especially as Charles added the finishing touch when he put them into paper cases, holding each one in place until it had set into the icing.
A very fiddly and extremely messy process, but hopefully worth it.
The birthday cake is also done, filled with white chocolate buttercream and pile high with a selection of chocolates.

Cupcakes are filled and topped and just waiting for fresh fruit to be added at the last minute.

The house has been blitzed from top to bottom, fridges are stocked to capacity, so now we just need Helen and Bill to arrive. One thing's for certin - we're not going to starve!!

I AM NOW ABOUT TO...

... sit down for the very first time today!!
Very productive day - but absolutely shattered now!
The girls have just turned in for the night and I'm guessing it won't be that long before I do the same!

BUSY, BUSY DAY.

Started (for ME, not Charles) early when the girls decided to get up at 7ish, but used this to great advantage by getting on with loads of baking. Have now got two slabs of Genoese sponge ready to cut up for fondant fancies, a large sponge ready for filling and icing and a batch of cupcakes ready to go into the oven.
James called in earlier, having got up early to continue his best man duties. Is this a never ending wedding? They're all having a hog roast today - I'm sure that'll cure any hangovers!!
Anyway, it was good to see him. He'd been nervous about his speech, but said it had gone well once he got started. I think he would have preferred to eat AFTER his speech because he said he didn't enjoy his meal much!
Right - Charles is going to get the grass cut (I hope) and I'm going to carry on with the baking!

AFTER THE WEDDING...

...Charles and I went into Morpeth to buy birthday presents for Christina. So far we've got a Pandora bracelet with five charms, a fab handbag and a dress and necklace from Laura Ashley. Two more dresses ordered online should arrive tomorrow. A box of chocs and some nice smellies and that should be us done.

(Oh and by the afternoon, my eye had begun to settle down again and to feel more comfortable.)

Did a little bit of baking this evening - just some Hummingbird chocolate fridge cake and an apricot and walnut teabread. The teabread smells fab!

END OF AN ERA?

And the beginning of a new one.

I am, of course, talking about the wedding today. Ed and Jen have tied the knot in the company of all their family and the best friends who've been part of a close group since middle school days.

Charles and I went along to Mitford and watched Jen arrive, along with Duncan's Mum, then waited for them to emerge after the service. (I'd never been to the church in Mitford before - it's absolutely beautiful and situated in the most idyllic setting.)

It was really emotional to see all the lads in their finery, being all grown up and sensible - and looking so handsome! (I bet they're not being so sensible now though. The party should be in full swing now!!)

So, I wonder who will be next?

HAVE HAD TO CANCEL...

... yet another hair appointment this morning.

The eye is playing up and there's no way I would be able to get myself to Morpeth. Maybe the sun isn't helping, but I'm really fed up now as things had seemed to be so much better yesterday.

I did think it was a little strange that the optician told me to stop the drops on Tuesday, especially as it was clear in the notes that they should be applied for two days after the infection has cleared up.

So, hopefully, I'll get the hair done on Monday morning, just before we go out for Xtina's birthday lunch - and in a way, that might actually be better! (Got to look on the bright side!)

We're going to Mitford later on to have a little look at the wedding and to drive James and Claire to Linden Hall for the reception. I wonder how he's feeling this morning - all that responsibility AND the speech. Bet he'll be ready for a drink when it's over!!!

HMMM?!

After boasting yesterday that my eye felt perfectly normal, I've woken up this morning to find that it's watering like mad again.
Looks like it's back to the drops again then.

AND SURE ENOUGH...

... after hours of fruitless searching for battery chargers last night, as soon as I mention to Charles that he, in fact, must have been the last person to have it, he goes to find a bag of stuff we had in New York - and there they are! Why didn't you do that before I turned the house upside down last night, I wonder.

Thursday, 22 July 2010

JAMES HAS JUST RUNG...

... to say that he can't find the charger for the camera that he needs to take to Ed's wedding tomorrow, so can he borrow mine?

Well, of course you can Jim - but, guess what...

... I CAN'T FIND MY CHARGER EITHER!!

(Ed is having not one, but TWO best men - James and his flatmate, Duncan. I'm sure they'll do a great job between them - just as long as they know where the rings are eh boys?!)

Now where's that flaming charger?

To be honest, I don't recall seeing it, well EVER. I know we must have had one because we must have used it in New York, but I honestly cannot recall using it myself, which can only mean...

... THAT CHARLES HAD IT LAST!

ON THE MEND!

For the first time today, I haven't needed any drops in the left eye and it feels perfectly comfortable again.

I've made a second trip into Morpeth and driving was absolutely fine. Feel much more confident now.

The girls are making progress also, although they do still cough a bit when they get over-excited.

I've spent part of the afternoon buying cake decorations for Xtina's birthday cake - or cakes to be accurate. I thought a mixture of fondant fancies and cupcakes would be a nice change from one big cake. I've got a display stand so they should look special.

James has just rung to say he's on his way up here, with the laundry of course! As for Charles he's got the delights of the End of Term Disco this evening and won't be in till late. He is, however, bringing an Indian with him. (Indian as in a takeaway and not a person - although this HAS happened before now!)

I KNOW IT'S BEEN SHOWN FOR A WHILE NOW...

... but you've got to love the Mastercard 'School's Out' advert!
Just think - it'll be most of YOU tomorrow afternoon.

UNBELIEVABLY...

... it's a whole year since I left Heddon - and I haven't set foot in a school since!!

Have I missed it? Apart from the lunatics on the staff - you know who you are! - not one bit!

Looking back, I think a fair few people were worried that I'd find retirement hard to adjust to. Let me just say - DUCK TO WATER!! I've enjoyed every minute!

I REALLY HOPE...

... the weather improves before Ed and Jen's Big Day tomorrow. They'll be really disappointed if it's anything like today - cold, blustery and wet. Yuk!

Having read up on Kennel Cough, which seems to be the condition the girls are suffering from, although goodness knows how they've got it, it would appear that cold and damp conditions are the least favourable for them, so I'm trying to persuade them that they need to stay inside in the warm. Unfortunately this is falling on deaf ears!!

They both sounded quite snuffly this morning when I came through to them, although they're both still happy to eat normally and are quite lively so far this morning. Antibiotics have been given and consumed amongst the goodies in their Kongs.

I've got a Tesco delivery coming this morning, having decided to stock up on all the store cupboard stuff we're likely to need during Helen and Bill's stay. They're coming on Monday, which is also Christina's 30th (!) birthday, so no sooner have they got here than we'll be off to Jesmond Dene House for a celebratory lunch - with the Birthday Girl of course!

(30 years! Where does it go? It just seems like yesterday that we were in the delivery suite at the John Radcliffe, overlooking the dreaming spires of Oxford watching in awe as the heavens opened to release the most dramatic thunderstorm I have ever experienced. And then Christina arrived!!)

HAVE JUST DRIVEN...

... to Morpeth and back, wearing my specs!

"So what," I hear you say.

Well it has been my belief up to now that I couldn't drive comfortably in my specs. This could hve arisen because I tried to do so when I first had the prescription made up and wasnt really used to them, or more likely because I have no real vision in my left eye when I'm not wearing contacts, but I reckoned that as I am perfectly capable of reading a number plate from the required distance, there really shouldn't be a problem.

So I gave it a go and everything was fine!

This is an important development because I'm probably not going to be able to wear lenses until I've seen BIG MAN FIGUERDO at the RVI in September, and I would have hated to lose my independence for that length of time.

It's also a significant development because I was able to cope with quite bright sunlight for the first time today, which shows that the eye really IS on the mend.

And in celebration of that, I am now able to apply the new eye shadow I purchased last week for just such a moment!!

WOKEN EARLY THIS MORNING...

... but not by the girls.
I think it must have been a bird - but not a bird I've ever heard before. It's difficult to describe the sound, but it was an extremely loud, shriek type squawk that went on for ages. It almost sounded as if the bird was having a panic attack. Certainly it was enough to wake ME up, and shortly after the girls were disturbed as well. (You'll notice Charles doesn't feature in the list of those whose sleep was abbreviated! Only when he'd got up in his own time did he ask,'What was that noise this morning? Was it outside or inside?' Well Charles, if it had been INSIDE don't you think it would have been a good idea to rush up and investigate?)

So, we're up and about. The washing's on, the house is cleaned and the girls have had their meds. They've had a gentle walk with Charles and there's been only minimal sneezing so far. In fact, in direct contrast to yesterday, they seem full of energy and mischief this morning, despite the interruption to their beauty sleep.

I forgot to mention that while we were at the vets, we popped the girls on the scales and discovered that Lily weighs in at 7.70kg and Rose came in just slightly under at 7.35. So still not a huge difference, which came as a bit of a surprise as I had expected Lily to weigh considerably more than her sister. Lily is much broader around the shoulders than Rose and feels much more solid - so much so that James calls her "Chunk", reinforcing Charles's opinion that Rose is the pretty one and Lily is the butch one!!!

GOTTA FEEL SORRY...

... FOR THE GIRLS TODAY.

Clearly they are feeling under the weather, but they've not been miserable because of it, just very lethargic. They must have slept for most of the day and still couldn't wait to get into their crate at bedtime.

It certainly hasn't been difficult to keep them calm and quiet - they've done that all by themselves. As for the coughing and sneezing - they've had a couple of episods, but nothing major today.

Lily has been taking her medicine without any bother at all, well disguised in her food and treats. Rose on the other hand, can sniff out the tiniest bit of tablet and spits it out of her bowl, leaving us to devise other ways of getting it down her throat. So far, the favourite method is breaking it into quarters and hiding each one in a piece of mature cheddar - that's fooled her today anyway.

I'M NOT GOING TO MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT THIS...

... but we finally got back from the RVI (having arrived there at 10am) at 3.30 this afternoon - and NO we didn't stop on the way home for lunch, that is purely the time it took to spend the grand total of ten minutes with an optician who told me that my eye is indeed getting better!

I waited a further twenty minutes for the receptionist girl to make an appointment (September!) with the objectionable Mr Figueredo, becasues she kept breaking off from what she was doing to have a chat to her colleagues and to glare furiously at a porter for about five minutes because he clearly wasn't doing his job the way SHE thought he should be doing it, and then I waited a further half hour for the prescription for more anti-coldsore stuff and, wait for it - artifical tears! Clearly I have cried so much from the bad eye that I have no tears of my own left!

All this time, of course, the dogs were in the car. Fortunately Charles was able to keep going out to them and took them for a couple of gentle walks. I say gentle because, following their visit to the vets again this morning in which it was confirmed that Rose does indeed have the same infection that Lily has, we were told to keep them very quiet and calm for the next week and avoid meeting other dogs. More antibiotics have been prescribed, but thankfully their coughing and sneezing seems to have been less today.

We met MILO's owner while we were waiting. Long time readers may remember Milo Schmilo from the days when the girls went to puppy parties and were traumatised on their first visit by this boisterous black labrador pup - MIlo no less. Anyway, Milo wasn't with her today - she was taking her cat to the vet. But she did say that he is dreadful at coming back when he's off his lead. (Get some little bits of cheese and chicken and you'll have no problem getting him back.)

So - back to the eye condition. I tried to have a conversation about the long-term prognosis, but the guy I saw today wasn't keen to get into that - and in fairness, probably didn't have time as there were still another hundered or so people waiting to see him. He talked briefly about corneal implants, although I will have to have been free of infection for a long time before that would be considered as the herpes simplex virus will attack the implant and I'll have no benefit at all. No doubt Mr Figuerdo will explain all in September!!! Ha ha ha - in all the time I've had the misfortune to encounter him he has never ONCE actually spoken to ME!! Well - he'll get a shock this time because I'm going to go armed with qustions!

HOWEVER...

... just to let you know, apart from their sneezing and coughing, the girls are still active and are eating normally.
(Just thought you'd all be interested!)

OH NO...

... now Rose is coughing and spluttering.
Just about to ring the vet to see if we need to take her in or whether we can just be given the same meds as we got for Lily yesterday.

Two minutes later: Need to take her in. Have appointment for 9.30 and then from there we'll all be off to the RVI for my eye consultation. Sounds like a good morning!

Monday, 19 July 2010

AND THE VET SAID...

... that Lily MAY have an infection as her glands are slightly up, or she may have an allergy and just to make sure she has given her antibiotics and antihistamines and prescribed a very quiet week!

Sod's Law - Lily hasn't sneezed ONCE since we got back £55 lighter, but...

WITHIN SECONDS OF SETTING FOOT BACK IN THE HOUSE ROSE WAS DOING EXACTLY THE SAME 'REVERSE SNEEZING'!! (This is what the vet called the strange thing that Lily wa doing earlier when I thought she was gasping for breath.)

Now, this may have been Rose's attempt at getting the attention focused on her as opposed to her sister, or it COULD have been genuine, but since then she hasn't shown any more symptoms.

Anyway, clearly we will be watching them closely and, if necessary, will be taking Rose for HER turn at the vets tomorrow.

TAKING LILY TO VETS

This may come as a bit of a sudden announcement, but for a few days now she has been sneezing pretty much constantly and it came to a head when I took the two of them out for a walk a few minutes ago and the sneezing escalated into gasps for breath. Obviously I returned with them quickly and called Charles and the vet. We are taking her at 4.30 today.
At the moment she's lying calmly enough and her breathing isn't laboured at all, but it gave me a bit of a scare, so we need to have her checked out.

THE DAMNED UNITED

We watched this film last night...
... and I ended up dreaming about Brian Clough.
This was not good.
Next time we watch a film, I'll make sure it's one with Johnny Depp in it!!

EYE UPDATE 2

It would appear that things are certainly improving in the eye department.
For the first time I woke up without a sticky eye and it felt almost normal - until I applied the drops and they caused some discomfort, but nothing like I have been having.
It'll be interesting to see what the doctor says tomorrow.
Talked to Helen last night. She and Bill are coming up here for their hols as we are giving the boat a miss this year. I'm really looking forward to it - it'll be just like the old days, when the kids were little and they used to come for a week and stay for a month! As we all get on so well, this has never, ever been a problem.
Interestingly, we'd started talking about the places we want to visit during their stay, and practically every one had something to do with FOOD!! Mind you, even when we're on the boat, we do tend to plan our journey according to the pubs and restaurants along the way, so maybe it's not that different.

MID JULY...

... and there's a flood alert today!

Sunday, 18 July 2010

FOR THE FIRST TIME...

... in a fortnight, I haven't been aware of the pain in my left eye this afternoon!
In fact, if it wasn't still a little swollen and discoloured, I'd say it was almost back to normal.

Not that I'm getting too excited yet! I won't be applying the mascara for a few days - (What a difference it makes to the make up routine when you don't put any on your eyes! A slick of lip gloss and that's been it recently!!) at least until I've been back to the clinic.

We've had a quietish day. Popped down to Morpeth late morning and obviously bumped into three of the revellers, but didn't stay to chat as they were no fun at all.
Christina brought a pile of Sunday papers (and a very nice orchid) round and stayed for lunch, after which we kind of lolled around as you do on a Sunday afternoon.
The girls have had a few walks and many grooming sessions as we are still making sure they are flea-free. (While I'm typing this in the kitchen, Rose has draped herself over the back of the leather bucket chair in the breakfast room and is peering over the safety gate that separates us making pathetic little mewling noises to try and attract my attention. I'm determined I'm not going to give her the satisfaction of turning round to look at her, because I know I'll not resist her!!)

HA HA HA - THEY'RE ALIVE...

... AND VERY QUIET!!!
Bumped into James, Edward and Dunc in Morpeth this morning. They were sloping off for their hangover cure fried breakfast. All three assured us they were 'fine'. Funny how we had to strain to hear it though!

G'DAY!!

Sunday again! Bit of a lie-in - thank you girls!!

Can't help wondering how James and the 'Golfers' got on last night! I bet there are some very sore heads this morning.

We can't decide what to do today. I'm still very uncomfortable in daylight, even with my reactive lenses, so probably won't be going out much. It's funny how, in the morning I feel as if the eye is as bad as ever, but by midday it seems to improve a little more each day. Charles is taking me back to Eye Casualty on Tuesday so we can get a true evaluation of any progress.

had quite a lecture from Christina last night about looking after myself and EATING MORE FRESH FRUIT! I've told her that I will make an effort, but that the problem with the eye is more deep seated than that. But I will try to eat more than I do Christina! (Maybe I should try carrots - they're supposed to help you see in the dark aren't they!?)

The girls have just nagged Charles to take them out for their early (ish) walk. Clearly they thought he was being a bit tardy today (he WAS) and they grumbled and tugged at him until he obliged!!

JAMES HAS...

... gone out for the night with Eddie and a group of mates and relatives for a second Stag Night before the wedding on Friday. The first, you will recall, was at the races and a very enjoyable time was had by all, although no one won anything worth mentioning!

THIS one is A GOLF NIGHT - and apparently the idea is you have to go to EIGHTEEN PUBS, have a drink in each one and keep score. Different drinks carry different pars, so he reckons the Guinness at the first one will be a par three and that means drinking it in three swallows!

I honestly cannot imagine how anyone can still be alive at the end of such an evening and I only hope that they all survive and are able to surface at some point before they have to go to work on Monday.

NUFC

Crikey - you can't even relax when they're playing CARLISLE can you?!

Just to let you know, I actually ventured out of the house this morning, into Morpeth - whoopie! (Charles was driving, of course.) The eye didn't play up too much, so there is definite progress I think. It was nice to be out for a while, even though the shopping was just boring food stuff.

The girls have been in a lovely mood again today. (You'll notice that I include both of them in ONE frame of mind, basically because they are so close that if one is in a particular mood, so is the other!) They love it when Charles is at home and follow him around like little shadows - roll on the summer holiday, they're going to love it!! (Only five more get ups now!)

Talking of 'get ups' I have noticed that, even when they wake early, they are much more content to wait reasonably quietly for us to go through to them these days. A while ago, Rose would wake and start barking for attention all at the same time, but she seems to have calmed down significantly recently.

Charles picked up the flea meds last night, so they were treated and groomed and there is no evidence of anything lurking in their coats I'm pleased to report!

Right - I'll go back to Newcastle Mad and see what the score is!!

THIS BLOG SEEMS TO HAVE TURNED INTO...

... THE MARIE CELESTE!

Only joking, I was going to say, it seems to have turned into a medical moans site.

All I seem to have done for the last fortnight is whinge about my eye - although that is a fair reflection of what has taken over my life for the last two weeks.

Charles has just emerged from kip and asked how it is this morning. And I have to say that although it isn't AS painful, the eye is STILL very swollen and the vision (such as it is in that eye) is extremely blurred, a bit like looking through cotton wool, if you can imagine that.

I'm feeling somewhat down about it now to be honest and can only hope that when I go back to the RVI I will be told that a) there IS actually some improvement and I just need to be patient or b) the treatment isn't effective and needs to be changed.

NOTHING TO WRITE ABOUT...

... because nothing is happening !
I've just mooched around, unable to focus on anything for very long.
The dogs have slept practically the entire day, so can't really say much about them!
Oh, have just thought of something: When I was giving Rose a cuddle I say a tiny little insect in her coat and immediately thought, 'Oh God, she's got fleas!' I've combed them both thoroughly and haven't found any other signs, but I've asked Charles to call at the vets on the way home to pick up some Flea meds just in case. I really hope I'm just being alarmist and, anyway, I don't know how they could have them as it's not as if they spend time with other dogs or in other people's houses. Still, better to get them treated just in case.
Charles, of course, is still not home, despite saying he'd be back by 5.00! (It's nearly 6.30!) He's just rung to see if I'd like him to pick up food and, of course, I said "Yes!"

ARE DOGS EVER DIAGNOSED WITH...

... ASPERGERS?
I think my two may suffer from some sort of autism!!
They find anything that deviates from the norm really hard to cope with. If something's in the wrong place or if there's an unexpected change to routine, they find it really difficult to deal with!!
Today, not only are we dealing with the high winds - but the people over the road (the ones who do every damn thing together, including putting the bin out and cleaning the windows) are having a new porch built this morning.
This change to routine, and their usual outlook, is driving the girls absolutely crazy. First off, they don't like any strange vehicles to be parked outside and then all the noise from the banging and hammering is driving them to distraction.
They've barked manically and have now been threatened with the PET CORRECTOR SPRAY which they hate and the sight of which causes them to cease and desist immediately. However, although no longer barking, they are now lying at the window, emitting low level grumbles and growls pretty much constantly as if they're saying, 'Ha ha Mum - you can't spray us for barking any more, but you're not going to stop us protesting!'

I LOVE IT WHEN...

... the girls have had their breakfast and licked the bowls spotlessly clean...

... and then turn them upside down to see if there's any more hiding underneath!!

VERY WINDY TODAY

In fact, it's blowing a gale out there.
The girls are already hyper, chasing anything that moves outside - and that gives them a number of options considering the amount of debris that's blowing around.
They're probably also making up for yesterday's very sleepy day - looks like I'll be in for fun then.

Eye update: I was really positive last night, but again this morning it's heavy and uncomfortable. I really wonder just how long this pretty intensive treatment is supposed to take before it kills off the bug. I've been on 800mgs oral Aciclovir and five applications of ointment a day since Monday and would have thought there would have been a more marked improvement by now.

It is, however, nearly the weekend and Charles should be able to drive me around for a couple of days so that I can get out and about. I'm beginning to feel a bit stir crazy after almost a fortnight of 'house arrest'.

WAS JUST ABOUT...

... to say that there appears to be some significant improvement in the eye department. However, I've just put the drops in and seem to have gone back to the involuntary closing and watering again. Maybe there IS an overall improvement and it's just an initial reaction to the drops. We'll see!

The girls have been totally lovely today. Very docile and sleepy most of the time, but lovely and cuddly as well. They seem to recognise that I'm a little off colour and try to make life a bit easier for me. Probably rubbish I know, but that's how it seems.

James and I have been shopping on line at the next sale this evening - there are some really good reductions to be had. Worth having a look.

FORGOT TO MENTION...

... that Lily appears to have come to no harm following her bee sting. She's eating normally and being as naughty as ever, taunting her sister and chasing around, so I'm sure she's feeling fine.
Hopefully she'll think twice before attempting to tackle a bee in future!

I MAY NOT PUBLISH THIS POST!!

We had a BAD evening yesterday.

I suppose it began when I had spent the afternoon making a proper dinner as Charles had said he would be home by 5.30. When he eventually turned up at closer to 7pm I was pretty fed up, although I should have known that things happen at work and timings have to be flexible. However, a quick phone call would have been helpful.

Things then went from bad to worse when a friend of Charles's rang up to say he is in the area and would like to meet up. There were a number of options for meeting , but Charles went for the 'Come to us' one, despite my quiet pleading otherwise. Please don't think that I am anti-social or awkward - but at the moment I am totally unable to get out to the shops so would find it near impossible to prepare anything to make the poor guy feel welcome. Plus I still look like a gargoyle, so there is some embarrassment on my part.

I have to admit that I was furious - mainly because I thought Charles would realise that I'm not able to cope with people just now. Things escalated and I admit that throwing the coke bottle was not a good idea - but I was SO frustrated.

When people come to our house I like to make sure that there is plenty of home cooking - even if it's just biscuits and cakes to go with a cuppa - and I feel so disappointed with myself for not being able to do this. During the night, when I was restless and awake, I have decided that whatever condition I was in this morning, I would make an attempt to drive to Morpeth to get some supplies in, but in the cold (and bright) light of day I've realised that that's a none starter. My left eye is STILL inflamed, closed and sore, and the right eye is still shutting in sympathy, so I won't be driving anywhere soon.

(The other thing that upset me is how the dogs just sat and stared at us as if they couldn't understand why there were raised voices. I am so sorry girls!)

DANNYMATT - PLEASE...

... forgive me.
In my obsession about myself and my eye condition, I have completely failed to pick up on one of your comments. It would appear that Cathy has had her operation and I haven't even asked how she is doing.
Please give her our love and big, but gentle, cuddles from the girls.

LILY HAS...

... just tried to EAT a bee.
We were down Villa lane, and on the way back from our walk she suddenly started shaking her head frantically and trying to push at her face with her paws.
When I knelt down to her there were the remains of a mangled bee at her feet, so I can only assume she's had it in her mouth, and I'm GUESSING she's been stung.
I can't get her to open her mouth to investigate and I'm watching her closely for any adverse reaction. She appears a little subdued - but then if she HAS been stung it will have given her a shock (and me as well).

FED UP...

... of listening to Sky Sports News in the forlorn hope of hearing some news about NUFC!
(Ha ha! bet you thought this was another annoying moan about my eye when you read the title!)

TRYING TO SHOW YOU A DIAGRAM...

...of my eye problem, but I can't get it to copy and paste.

Basically the ulcer looks like a tree with lots of branches leading from a main trunk - and I have TWO of these, of course!

But the following is a brief summary of the symptoms of the condition, just in case you are interested!!

"As the cornea has many nerves it feels pain easily.

Dendritic corneal ulcers are painful; your eye feels as though something is scratching it.

Sunlight and bright lights feel painful also.

As the ulcer is like 'paint on a window' your sight may be blurred.

Dendritic ulcer is painful."

Look how many times pain is mentioned! Now you know why I had to cut the fringe!!!

RAINY DAY

Crikey - it must have rained a lot in the night, with lots more to come if the forecast is accurate.
The girls have been out in their waterproofs this morning and Lily is being Mrs Grump for some reason! (Maybe she's picking up on MY frustration.)
I'm quite comfortable in the reduced brightness though - it certainly helps to keep the tears at bay.

IS THERE AN IMPROVEMENT?

Well - I need to think about that - which in itself would indicate that perhaps any improvement isn't as dramatic as I would have hoped for.
Maybe there's slightly less swelling, and there was certainly reduced gunge when I woke up, but still very uncomfortable.
So - very slight improvement I guess.

HAVE HAD TO...

... cut my fringe!!
This is NEVER a good idea, especially when you've only got one eye, but I couldn't stand it any more. It had got to the stage where it was well over my eyebrows and was really irritating my left eye. I know that sounds pathetic, but the slightest pressure seems to be hugely magnified at the moment.
Anyway - I've done the best I can under the circumstances. I know for a fact that James will tell me I've cut it wonky, but right now I don't honestly care!

JUST WAITING NOW!

I've used my new eye stuff twice since this morning and I'm just waiting for some relief. Nothing much happening just yet though!

I'm praying for the sun to disappear and then I can go out with the girls. At the moment it's just too bright and when my bad eye starts to water, the good eye closes in sympathy, so effectively I'm not able to see anything. This is not good when you've got two little dogs to walk!

My Mum, bless her, thinks I should get an eye patch. I said perhaps I should go the whole hog and get a parrot (Only a pretend one cos of my bird phobia) and a wooden leg as well. Ooh argh!

They're being very patient, although I can tell that they're beginning to feel a bit restless now and they're starting to get grumpy with each other. They've just been playing their favourite game of 'water bowl curling' but seem to have scored a bit of an own goal by sending it scooting under the fence and out of reach!!They're WILLING me to get it back for them, but it's not going to happen I'm afraid!

DENDRITIC ULCERS

That's what I've got!
Caused by the herpes simplex or cold sore virus, which is the nasty little bugger that has eaten away at the cornea.
I have to take some of the blame here because I've been a bit careless about taking the anti-coldsore tablets I should take every day, but having been free of issues for a few years I suppose I've become a bit cavalier about it.
Fortunately, the doctor I saw was really understanding and took the time to explain what's going on and why it's been so painful, even drawing little diagrams of the ulcers!!
I must also say that, despite my earlier predictions, we got straight in and didn't have to wait at all, in fact the longest delay was when we were at the pharmacy.

WELL THAT PLAN WON'T WORK!

According to my GP the eye clinic opens at ten.

According to the RVI website they actually open at 8.30!!

So, as it's already 8.20 and we're still at home, we're not going to be at the front of the queue are we?

JUST GETTING READY...

... to go to the RVI where, hopefully, I'll find out what's causing my current eye problem and, even more hopefully, get some medication to help clear it up.

Charles is taking me in as there's no way I can drive, but will be going into work as soon as I'm sorted - and then won't get home until about 8.30 this evening as he's got parents meetings after school. (Oh, I remember it well!)

Lily and Rose, our big grown up girls, had a great day yesterday, but need to get back to normal now so won't be having so many treats today. Sorry girls!

Okay - I'll let you know how I get on later. We're going to try to get there before the clinic opens at 10.00 so that we're well up in the queue and, in theory, shouldn't have to wait too long. We'll see!!

CHARLES IS...

... going to do the shopping tonight as I am currently indisposed. I bet he's really pleased about that after a day at work!

The DOGS(!) have had a lovely day so far, but are currently lying in an exhausted heap following their playful exertions this afternoon.

I have noticed that my left eye has actually stopped streaming since lunchtime today. It's still a swollen mess mind you, but it's a relief not to be constantly wiping the tears away.

This morning I sent a message to the family we got Lily and Rose from, telling her how wonderful the girls are and pointing them in the direction of this blog. I had a lovely reply wishing the girls a happy birthday and saying that the blog is fab!!

AND AS PREDICTED...

...I now need to go to Eye Casualty.
This all has such a familiar ring to it!
Charles is, hopefully, going to come and pick me up so that I can get there this morning, although I know from past experience, that the chances of getting seen and out of there within three hours, are minimal.
(Have just talked to him and we've decided to go first thing tomorrow as his diary is full today.)

VERY EFFICIENT!

Have just rung the doctor's surgery and have an appointment in half an hour.
Very good service!

EYE UPDATE

NO IMPROVEMENT WHATSOEVER.
Last night could barely even watch the footie as it constantly streamed and just wanted to be closed.
Will ring surgery later, but predict a referral to the RVI coming up!
I've been dreading this outcome, as I am all to familiar with the Eye Clinic and a certain Mr Figueredo who may be the top man in his field but has the manners of a wild boar in a field full of sows wearing truffle necklaces.
I have been treated by the great man (or more usually one of his minions) on a number of occasions, and although he has had a look at my eye (to which the rest of me is attached) he has never ONCE spoken to me or acknowledged my presence in any way. He occasionally deigns to bluster into the consulting room having made everyone aware of his presence from the other end of the corridor as he barges around being the very important man that he clearly is.
As you can probably tell - I'm not his biggest fan!

CHARLES RECKONS...

... the girls KNOW it's their birthday today, because he says they've got an extra spring in their step and were bouncing around happily when he took them out this morning!!

They are now proudly wearing new (pink!) collars and have brand new toys to destroy, oops I mean to play with. There is a variety of delectable treats for later in the day (although these will be rationed of course) and he even bought them gourmet food for their birthday meals!!

I really hope they enjoy their day as much as we are doing!!

ALL TOGETHER NOW...

... ONE, TWO, THREE...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LILY AND ROSE,
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!

Three cheers for our girls...
Hip hip hooray!
Hip hip hooray!
Hip hip hooray!!

OKAY...

.. everyone's home - and so is their washing!! Oh joy!
Forget what I said this morning about the eye looking a bit better - it isn't, so I'm feeling pretty miserable now. After all, it's been a week since it started.
Charles DID manage to go birthday present shopping for the girls - all hidden away, so we don't spoil the big surprise tomorrow!!

CHERRY STONES

It's that time of the year when we can't set foot outside the house without trampling on dozens of cherry stones. The tree in our front garden is absolutely laden with cherries (It's a cherry tree obviously!) and the birds eat them and then drop the stones willy-nilly all around the drive and the garden. Mind you, as they are still very under-ripe I would urge caution on the part of these feathered fiends (not a spelling mistake: birds are NOT my friends!) as they risk getting a very bad case of diarrh.... diarhoe...the runs.

EARLY START TODAY...

... but hardly surprising as the girls had gone to bed at 8.30 last night. I could hear them muttering for a while before I prised myself out of bed and checked the poorly eye. I THINK there's a slight diminishing of the swelling today, (or maybe I'm just getting used to looking like someone who's gone ten rounds in the boxing ring), so fingers crossed it's going the right way.

It's much fresher today after all the rain last night - and quite blustery too. We've just got back from our early walk and nearly got blown away a few times. The girls had a little visit from Tess, a collie cross, who lives around the corner and is almost never on a lead, but is so good she doesn't seem to need one. She came running up to my two and immediately rolled over submissively for them to check her out. She must think she's no match for the two of them!!

Haven't heard from Charles yet, but presumably the Party People will all take a while to come round this morning!! Hope they all had a good time and enjoyed their evening. I'm looking forward to seeing the photos!

Charles has strict instructions to go shopping on his way home. Not for groceries, Tesco are delivering those later, but more importantly for birthday presents for the girls who will be one year old tomorrow. He'd better get some nice stuff - don't want them to be disappointed on such a special day!!!!

SUMMER RAIN

I love it!
It's still really warm, but the rain is torrential and a bit like a lukewarm shower.
Lily, bless her, has just decided she absolutely HAD to go out for a wee, then needed a few minutes playtime in the puddles and has had to be towelled dry. I think she quite likes this though, because she thinks of it as a variation on a cuddle, which she loves!
It's been one of those days when the girls haven't slept much during the day and they're really struggling to stay awake now. I DID try to get them to watch the football with me, but Rose was being a little pest and wouldn't settle, which mean that Lily felt obliged to join in the naughtiness.
Anyway, back to the football - I know it will be the Kiss of Death for them, but I really want Uruguay to win as they've been my second team all the way through.

GOOSE GRASS!

You know the stuff - long stems of sticky litle seeds like velcro beads?
Well - Rose has just discovered that it's NOT a good idea to back right into a patch of the stuff, as she did when she was greeting little Matilda about an hour ago - because it's taken us the best part of that hour to extract the zillion little buggers that had attached themselves to her coat.

SEEMS TO BE A LONG DAY!

Probably because I'm stuck in the house on my own (feeling like Cinderella actually).
It's really warm and humid and we keep having very heavy showers, so walking the dogs without getting drenched is a bit of a lottery.
Charles has arrived in Preston the Party Place so I'm sure he's getting into the spirit of things over there. James is in Leeds for the weekend and Christina is full of cold or flu or something and should be relaxing at home, but knowing her she'll stillbe working like mad.
As for me, I'm now sick of Sky News reporters attempting to draw their own conclusions about last night. (It was interesting to hear that Moat was getting so sick of their 'inaccurate' reporting that this was the reason why he threatened the wider public.) Just leave it alone now and wait for the report to come out.
The eye is calmer than it was this morning, but that seems to be the pattern. It gradually gets a little less swollen during the day (although never back to normal) only to be inflamed again when I wake up.
Will make a decision on Monday about whether to go to eye casualty.

ALL OVER...

... for Raul Moat.
Now the investigation into the police handling of it all will begin, no doubt.
Perhaps Rothbury (or ROATHBURY as the BBC reporter insisted on calling it last night) can start to get back to normal, although I expect there will still be plenty of forensics activity going on for a while yet.

Charles has just set off on his own to Preston and this should tell you all you need to know about the state of my eye this morning. Clearly, it's not good. I hope he (and the rest of the partygers) have a great time this evening.

Anyone want a really nice 'Damsel in a Dress' dress?? It's pale grey silk, with raspberry and lime beading at the neckline. Also available are a shrug, suede shoes and shawl - all in raspberry. Brand new - never worn.

HOW GORGEOUS ARE OUR GIRLS?

We've bathed and blow-dried them - and they look (and smell) fabulous! (Mind you, they've just eaten their tea, and now have gravy all round their faces, so it didn't last long!)

When we're drying them the difference in their coats is really apparent. Rose, for all her fluffiness, dries really quickly, but Lily, with her dense, thick coat, takes ages to dry properly.

They love bath time and get really excited when they realise that's what's about to happen, practically jumping into the bath unaided. They even seem to enjoy being dried and brushed and seem to find it quite relaxing.(Clearly the doggy version of going to SAKs)

Quick update on the police search: Five Met BMWs have just gone screeching into Brinkburn Priory, their sirens clearly audible from our house. The RAF tornado is scanning the skies again. And a young police officer is now in major hot water because she read out a card from local children during a televised briefing in which they described Moat as a 'nutter'. (And we wouldn't want him to think that we think he's a nutter now would we?)

I'M PACKED...

... and pretty much ready to go to Preston, providing the eye miracle happens.
Just need to get the girls' stuff ready. They're going to be bathed tonight because we couldn't inflict them on their Grandma in their present state!
Actually, the list of kit we need to take for them - just for one night - is ridiculous, almost a bad as taking a baby away for the night.
We need: sleeping crate and travel crate, bedding, towels, poop bags, food, bowls, water, treats, toys and leads. It'll be the longest journey they've been on, so hope they travel okay.

(Charles has just arrived home on his way back from Alnwick for a quick cuppa before going back to school for the afternoon, so I'll go and see him for a minute.)

Ten minutes later...
... We've had a chat and agreed that if I'm still like this tomorrow morning, I won't be going to preston at all. In the meantime though, I'm going to assume that all will be well - AND WILL TRY TO DO SOMETHING WITH MY HAIR THIS AFTERNOON!!

PONTELAND

Will someone please tell these reporters how to pronounce PontEEEland - please!

WELL, THERE YOU GO!

It would appear that all the activity in the air last night was actually the RAF joining in the search over Rothbury.
I had originally thought that it was the standard Thursday activity which we seem to have in the summer months, but apparently not. (Come to think of it they weren't the usual screeching low fliers we get coming in across the North Sea. We've been here for twenty two years now - and have never got used to the noise those things make. I'll never forget the time my Dad was staying in the caravan he and Mum had down Villa Lane, throwing himself to the ground because he thought we were under attack!)

(Have just had my neighbour at the door - and couldn't even look at her without tears streaming down my cheeks. Not that she's THAT ugly - but the light was just too much for my infected eye.)

NEED TO CANCEL...

... my hair appointment today. This is a major blow, as it's Richard and Sarah's party this weekend and IF I am going I had hoped my hair might look part way respectable, unlike the bird's nest it resembles when I do it. But, not only can I not drive there, I also have to wait in for a delivery that could come any time during the day, so that's the hair scuppered.

FED UP NOW.

STILL no improvement in the eye department. Not sure what to do to be honest. I could try to see the GP today, or could be patient (get that Dannymatt!) and see what happens with the meds over the weekend. I suppose it's like any infection, it starts to get you down after a while and it has been a week now which is why I'm feeling a bit low.
Charles is having a slightly more relaxed start to the day as he's got a meeting in Alnwick this morning so doesn't need to leave home at his usual early hour. Hopefully, the pups will get a good walk before he goes!!
Still no sign of Moat. I'm beginning to wonder if he is really still in the area. He could be long gone by now. I'm also thinking that as he is supposedly hiding out so close to Otterburn, why on earth don't the police get the army involved and give them a real target to get their teeth into (not of course literally - unless it's one of the dogs).

Thursday, 8 July 2010

SO, WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND...

... is how the police have got the information that Moat will now target the general public. Who's telling them this? Is it some of these 'accomplices'? And how on earth, when he only got out of prison on Thursday, has he managed to get such a network of support around him? (Not that it's turned out to be very good support as they've got themselves arrested, but still it makes you wonder how this has all been planned.)

WATCHING THE NEWS COVERAGE...

... of the search for Moat.
There is a large number of police investigating what looks like a derelict farmhouse.
Nothing remarkable in that, given the number of buildings that must have been searched in the last couple of days, but the thing that caught my attention was a group of officers standing a little distance from the house just throwing sticks for their dog to retrieve! He was having a great time and presumably enjoying a few minutes 'off duty'.

RUMOURS!!

I just don't know which channel to watch or which site to be on at the moment!!
I want to keep up to date with the Moat story, but, someone on Newcastle United Mad is suggesting that NUFC may have been sold, so I'm now frantically trying to find anything to back this up!!!
Stupid, I know because a) It's just a rumour and therefore not really worth getting excited about and b) If there IS anything in it, it'll be flagged up on SSN's breaking news anyway.
I think it's probably because I'm pretty much confined to the house
at the moment, so am just clutching at straws!!

NO PROGRESS...

... on either the manhunt or the eye problem I'm afraid.

Despite all that police activity last night Moat seems to have evaded them completely. Maybe he's no longer around here - he's had long enough to get some distance away I would have thought.

As for the eye - I had high hopes that the chloramphenicol would have started to make an impact, but, alas, it is actually WORSE today - almost completely closed. I am now seriously fed up and seriously doubt that I'll be going to that party this weekend unless there is a dramatic improvement over the next two days. I know Charles will be disappointed as it's his brother's party, but I hope he'll understand if that's what has to happen.

James stayed over last night - he came up to watch the football and have a chilled evening with his ole Mom and Pop! It was just like the old days!! (One of us couldn't get in the bathroom this morning!)

Right - the girls are scoffing their breakfast al fresco this morning and we'll head out for a walk in a few minutes. It's quite overcast at the moment, which I am appreciating while my eye is infected as the sunshine just makes it water even more - so we'll make the most of the clouds today.

(Must remember to get them something for their birthday on Monday!!!)

Wednesday, 7 July 2010

THERE'S STILL A HELICOPTER...

...flying over the fields towards Rothbury.
Also we can clearly hear lots of explosions - but that could well be from Otterburn if there's an exercise on at present.
There certainly seems to have been an increase in activity this evening.

BEEN TO THE DOCS...

... and she agreed with my diagnosis and my suggested medication!!!
To be honest, I don't think she'd seen such a messed up eye before. In fact, whenever i go to the hospital or the opticians I tend to have a crowd of interested parties viewing my damaged cornea. 'Come and look at this. you won't have seen anything like it before...'
Anyway, we agreed it's probably straightofrward conjunctivitis and not the Giant Papillary variety, not is it Uveitis (yet).
So I got Charles to take a few minutes out of his report writing to drive me down to the chemist in Morpeth and am now smeared in gunky stuff which hopefully will do the trick.

'DRY SEASON' BY DAN SMITH

Sadly, I finished this book last night.
For the past few days I've limited my reading in an attempt to prolong the experience a bit longer, but couldn't keep it up and gave in yesterday! I now feel quite bereft as I had completely immeresed myself in the story and the tough life in an off-the-track Brazilian village.
This book is a real winner and absolutely MUST be made into a film. Rough and violent it may be, but the storyline is absolutely gripping.
Congratulations to Dan Smith. What a brilliant debut!!

HAVEN'T CAUGHT HIM THEN.

I was hoping to wake up to the news that he'd been found and detained, ut that hasn't happened.
I was also hoping to wake up to find that my eye was better. That hasn't happened either.
Oh well - you can't have everything I suppose.
Going to the surgery this afternoon, so hopefully some progress will be made there.
Charles is working on his reports from home today, which means tiptoeing around so as not to disturb him!!

BEEN GLUED...

... to Sky News all day today.
It feels really strange to know it's all going on literally just along the road.
In fact I notice that my neighbour - The Mouse Man no less, is parked up at the bridge at Pauperhaugh which is where the reporters are, and is clearly intent on getting his 'Rabbit Response Vehicle' noticed on the telly - good bit of advertising eh Craig!

ROTHBURY

Now the police chase for Raoul Moat has moved to Rothbury.

Christina has been keeping me informed about the number of police cars that are heading up the A697 and are stationed in Longhorsley and Longframlington.

James's flatemate is the pharmacist in Rothbury so I really hope he's safe.

The search appears to be focused around Cragside and I can clearly hear the helicopters from here.

Just hope this ends quickly.

I'M WAITING...

... for a delivery from John Lewis. Hopefully a dress which i will wear to the Silver Wedding party that we're going to at the weekend.
Although, in all honesty, if my eye trouble hasn't improved I won't be going anywhere - and then it'll be a waste of a dress.
The party is over in Preston and were going to try taking the pups, although I'm a little anxious about how they'll cope with the long journey AND being left in my mother-in-law's house while we go out and enjoy ourselves.
At the moment, the last thing I really feel up to is partying and just hope my GP can perform a rapid miracle tomorrow to get things back to normal.

ALL THE NEWS TODAY...

... is about Raoul Moat, who is still at large after his weekend shooting spree in Gateshead. He's clearly prepared to do as much damage as he can before he accepts the inevitable consequence.
I just hope he's caught quickly before anyone else is hurt.

NOT SO GOOD...

... in the eye department this morning.
Quite swollen again, which is a big disappointment after the slight improvement yesterday.
Feeling a bit down about it to be honest.

RIGHT...

... that's the garden tidied up a bit. Great clumps of Johnsons Blue geraniums gone, big branch from the lavatera (spelling?) snapped off, lilies broken and bashed - such a shame.
Have just rung the surgery to see if I can make an appointment as, although there is some slight improvement, my eye is still not back to normal. The earliest I can get to see a doctor is Wednesday afternoon, so I hope it doesn't deteriorate in the meantime.
The main problem when I'm like this is that I cannot wear contact lenses, and without those I'm unable to drive, so I'm effectively stuck in Fram for the duration. It's not as though there is anything I have GOT to do, it's just the knowledge that even if I wanted to I couldn't that makes it rather frustrating.

WELL...

... the wind has dropped a bit, so it may be a day for tidying up the damage in the garden.
Talking of which, I think Charles has been a bit over enthusiastic in his 'tidying up' as the other day it occurred to me that my roses weren't flowering yet, unlike everyone else's. On closer inspection though, it turned out that where my rose bushes should have been, there was now nothing more that a few very short, prickly twigs. Charles must have taken pruning to an extreme and has pretty much decimated the poor things - which in all honesty I'm quite cross about because they're clearly not going to recover this year, or maybe ever again.
And the lesson today is... Don't let Charles loose with the secateurs in future!

WHERE DID...

... these gale force winds suddenly appear from?
We've got the cushions from the garden furniture blowing all over the place, the perennial geraniums have been dashed to the ground and will have to be cut right back (which is a real shame as they were looking stunning) and there is garden debris all over the place, making it look more like Autumn than Summer.
The girls are struggling to maintain any composure whatsoever as windy weather turns them into little monsters. They've been in and out all day (no sooner were they let in than they wanted to be out again!), play fighting pretty much all the time and Lily has just finished things off by quite deliberately tipping the water bowl all over the kitchen floor and then paddling in it. Thanks Lil, the floor DID need a wash, but I wasn't planning on doing it this evening.
Charles is still working on his reports, but is going to have a break in a minute to take the pups out. I'm letting him do all the walks today as the sunlight really affects my bad eye - and anyway, I would struggle to stand up in some of these gusts!
There appears to be absolutely nothing worth watching on telly tonight, so I may start working my way through my 'Outnumbered' DVDs, despite the series being rubbished by dannymatt!!

HMMM. THAT DIDN'T GO...

... according to plan!
Lunch at Heighley Gate's new pasta pizza place didn't happen, mainly because we turned up just after the entire population of the North East sat down to order and were then told that it would be at least half an hour before we would even get a starter. So, as neither of us were prepared to wait, we went to Marabini's - only to find it closed, and then ended up at Gianni's where we had an okay(ish) meal but felt depressed by the gloomy lighting (supposed to be romantic I suppose, but just looks like they're too mean to put the lights on) and dowdy decor that hasn't changed since James was a toddler.
After that we did a few chores in Morpeth, then rushed back so Charles could get on with his reports and I could watch the tennis. However, you'll notice that, carrying on the theme from earlier, I'm not actually settled down in front of the telly enjoying the match and am in fact, still prowling around like a cat on hot bricks for some reason.
The latest eye examination would appear to show a very slight decrease in the swelling, so I'm hoping that given a couple of days, it might be back to normal without the intervention of the doc!

AS SOMEONE WHO HAS A PHOBIA...

... about BIRDS, my biggest fear, when we got the pups, was that they would turn into bird catchers and bring me little feathery presents which would result in me either screaming in terror and running a mile, or passing out on the spot. Either way I wouldn't deal with it at all well, as anyone who knows me will verify.
And the point of telling you this...
...is that Lily has just gone outside and caught her first bird! Oh God! Fortunately, Charles was able to deal with it after hearing my hysterical shrieks. I can only hope that this doesn't turn into her favourite pastime as there is absolutely no way I would be able to go anywhere near her if she had a bird in her mouth.

CAN'T SETTLE...

... to anything today.
The girls are flat out in their room, Charles is busy and cannot be disturbed and I'm sort of prowling around doing nothing in particular.
Every five minutes I keep looking in the mirror to see if the swelling round my eye is going down yet. (It's not!)
I'm trying to avoid making another cuppa because my insides are awash.
I don't want to read my book, because I'll finish it too soon and I want to be sure that I am left alone without any interruptions when I do.
Can't make anything for lunch cos we're going out.
Don't want to bake because we'll just end up consuming stuff we don't really need to eat and, let's face it, ALL baking is fattening.
Can't put the telly on in the living room in case it disturbs Charles. Can't watch anything in the pup's room because Lily's asleep on the (only) chair and I don't fancy sitting on the floor.
Can't even be bothered to sort our my make up bag(s). Now this is usually quite a pleasant activity, where I discover loads of stuff I've forgotten I'd got - but when you've got an eye that's twice the size it should be (well the eyeLID is twice the size - the actual eye cannot be seen), you don't want to be putting eye shadow and mascara on and drawing even more attention to it.
So in short - can't do very much then. (I'm not good at doing nothing!)

SUNDAY ONCE MORE

And I had to unglue my left eye before I could see anything this morning. Not pleasant at all.
Don't want to do much today - just going to lie around feeling sorry for myself!!
We have, however, decided to go to Heighley Gate for lunch in their new pizza pasta resturant just so that Charles gets a bit of a break from the reports. (We'll need to go early so we can get back for the men's final)
Lily and Rose have been adorable this morning (as they are every morning to be fair) and Charles has sat with each of them giving them a good grooming session so they now look very smart.
I've just checked their Kennel Club documents because we knew their birthday was coming up shortly, but weren't sure of the exact date. Now we know - on the 12th July they will be one year old! I suppose after that I won't be able to refer to them as 'pups' any more!
Right, I'm off to get their breakfast ready...

I'VE JUST THOUGHT...

... that maybe my eye infection is connected to the incident with the building dust when I was in Morpeth the other day and had to drive home with my eyes streaming.
Perhaps I should ring one of those companies that advertise on the telly and claim compensation. Does it count as an accident? 'Have you had an accident that wasn't your fault?' (How can an accident ever be your fault - It's an ACCIDENT for God's sake!) Injury lawyers for you - 'We're REAL lawyers' (Well I should bloody well hope you are and that you're not just pretending to be.)
It does seem a bit of a coincidence. I look like I've gone ten rounds with Mike Tyson actually. The left eye is almost shut and very painful. It looks like really bad conjuctivitis, but let me tell you - yours truly doesn't suffer from boring old ordinary conjuctivitis, oh no, she gets GIANT PAPILLARY CONJUNCTIVITIS (Look it up, it's a real condition)or uveitis which is even worse.
Can you tell I'm feeling really sorry for myself tonight?

CHINESE TAKEAWAY TONIGHT

I'm feeling lazy and slightly underpar, so Charles is picking up a takeaway later. Crispy duck, chicken satay, crispy beef and chicken with pineapple - yum yum!!
I can never understand the myth that eating breakfast fills you up and you don't need so much to eat later in the day. I find that when I don't eat breakfast - which is most days - I can exist quite happily on very little, but when I DO have breakfast, as I did with Jim this morning, I'm ravenous for the rest of the day. How does that work?

SO...

... it's probably not worth me saying that I hope Nadal wins tomorrow then!

ALL BETS ARE OFF!!!

Germany three to the good now.
Guess they're strong favourites for the trophy now.
Charles is having a mini-break from his reports, allegedly so he can watch the match, but actually so he can have a cuddle with his girls and they can all fall asleep on the settee!
I'm the only one watching the game!
I've tried to convince him that he could get the grass cut before he starts the next round of reports as it's going to rain tomorrow, but strangely he's not so keen! I would happily do it myself, but am too feeble to pull the starter - honest!

GERMANY...

... 2 up after an hour.
So much for MY prediction then!!

ARGENTINA V GERMANY

Any predictions?
I'm going 2 - 1.
Really want Argentina to win this, as much for Jonas as anything else.
And on the matter of football...
...Did anyone else watch the Ghana v Uruguay game last night? What a finish! It was hilarious in the hairdressers this morning. James came in to have his hair cut while I was part way through having mine done. As soon as he sat down his stylist started talking about the match and how exciting it was, and then some of the other girls joined in enthusiastically - only for James to have to confess that he hadn't actually seen the game and had watched a film instead!! Talk about role reversal!
And now on the subject of hair - my transformation into the Mother of the Westies is pretty nearly complete and my hair is just about the same shade as the girls' - well they say that dogs look like their owners, or vice versa.

STILL READING...

... 'Dry Season' but trying to limit myself now to make it last longer. Woke up this morning and actually expected to be in the Brazilian rainforest!
Charles suggested that I call in to Waterstones this morning, to see if they are stocking it and to let them know that the author is up for the Brit Writer's Award this month (up against Terry Pratchett no less) so they could give it a plug. Well, I DID, but I really wish I hadn't bothered. The staff were totally underwhelmed, commented that they did indeed have it in stock, but to the best of their knowledge hadn't sold a single copy. Well then perhaps giving the author, WHO IS FROM THE LOCAL AREA, a bit of publicity would help you to shift some copies then, you dopes!
From what I've read so far, it is crying out to be made into a film.
GO AND BUY THIS BOOK AT ONCE!

WHAT A PAIN!

After months of having no problems with my troublesome left eye, I appear to have woken up this morning to a recurrence of the old infection.
Very swollen and gungy - not pleasant at all. Of course, because it seemed to have resolved itself, I cancelled my repeat prescription of the drugs I used to take to control it and will now need to see my GP who will then refer my to the eye clinic at the RVI to get the prescription, which after all this time, I could probably write myself.
One of the meds I should take regularly is one which prevents cold sores, at is it that virus that has attacked the cornea. Of course, when there isn't a problem, I get a bit careless about taking the tablets and, and voila, it bites me in the bum as a reminder that I shouldn't get complacent.

(Dannymatt - no problem!! Does you good to get it off your chest though!)

SATURDAY MORNING

Lily and Rose are fed and watered. They've had their early walk and are now trying to decide whether they want to play outside or have a doze inside! (or even a doze outside, eh Lily)
Charles is looking forward to a day of report writing and is setting himself up at the garden table round the back where it is more shady.
And I'm off to the hairdressers to get my colour done! But I'm meeting James for breakfast in Costa first.
Now, who's day would I rather have - Charles's or mine? Let's think about that !!!

URUGUAY...

... is my second team! (Well, actually my first team now that Englnd have gone.)
Come on Forlan! You know you want to!

CAN'T TALK NOW...

... I'M READING!

NEARLY THE START...

... of the weekend again. and for all you teachers...

... only fifteen more get ups before FREEDOM!!

Charles has pottered down to Embleton Hall for a headteachers' meeting this morning, carelessly dropping his wallet on the drive as he pulled away, but fortunately spotted by my good self before he discovered he had no money to pay for the drinks! (Only joking about the drinks, they don't have THAT much of a jolly!)

The pups are fed and watered and have played that really good game of tipping the water bowl over and using it to play their version of curling around the patio. They're getting pretty good at it now and I'm wondering if there's a canine curling league they could join. Any ideas?

The sun's emerging after a night of pretty heavy rain that thankfully means I don't need to water the garden for once. It does feel a bit fresher out there this morning which is a good thing after yesterday's oppressive, headache-inducing heat.

I'm going to get my jobs dne, then continue with my book, which is turning out to be a real page-turner. I'll lend it to anyone who's interested - oh wait a minute, there's only dannymatt out there isn't there! Oh well - t's yours if you want it then dannymatt!

DUST UNDER THE CONTACT LENS...

... is really painful.
I know this because it happens to me occasionally, but I had the double whammy of BOTH eyes being infiltrated with dust and grit this morning as I walked through the new shopping centre in Morpeth, only to find that there are workmen demolishing the bit they missed earlier and creating great clouds of the stuff.
Not having any solutions with me, I had to drive home with tears streaming down my face. (Although if anyone had seen me they would probably have thought my obvious distress was caused by the Heighley Gate snails.)

YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL...

... which old dears are going to Heighley Gate, before they've got to within 1/4 of mile of the place.
They start on the A697 slip-road, crawling at a snail's pace and indicating furiously even though, at the rate they're travelling, they're not going to get there for another day or so.
You can just imagine their conversation: 'Isn't there a lot of traffic behind us Dear?' 'Yes Love, there is, but it's okay, because WE'RE IN THE LEAD!'
This, by the way, is merely an observation, just in case dannymatt thinks I'm not practising patience and tolerance!

OUTNUMBERED

Has anyone else discovered this sitcom yet?
It has got to be the most original family-based comedy on TV, largely due to the incredible cast (Hugh Dennis is the dad) especially the three kids. It's either a pretty dysfunctional family - or a fairly normal one, depending on your own situation, but most of the kids lines are totally unscripted and the adults have to work round that. The result is half an hour of spontaneous craziness, that just seems so real!
I've become addicted to it and have just ordered the first two series from Amazon.
If you haven't caught it yet, I can absolutely recommend it. It's too good to miss!
