Young At Heart

LILY & ROSE

Here are some photos of Lily & Rose. There are a few from the first time we saw them when they were just 4 weeks old. They would fit on your hand at this age and didn't look much like westies!

JUST GOT BACK!

had a great day with the family, although the lunch itself was somewhat disappointing. A typical example of a pub overstretching itself with a far too complex menu and not doing anything really well. Have a more limited menu, but cook only the best ingredients and deliver amazing quality = a recipe for success.

Despite the poor food, the company was great. Lots of laughter and banter across the age groups.

We went back to Mum's to recover from lunch, sit in the garden and have tea. She DID behave today!!

The girls have had a busy time with their cousins Digby and Texas and later on with my brother's very gorgeous Samoyed, Kai. They will certainly sleep well tonight!!

OFF WE GO!

Just as soon as Charles has finished reading out the menu from one of the restaurants he's found for us to visit in France!

Oh no - now he's onto the website of "THE BEST RESTAURANT IN FRANCE"...

... Oh forget that, he's just seen the prices!!

So, as soon as he can extricate himself from the gastronomic delights ahead, we'll be on the way to Ilkley Moor and the Cow and Calf Inn, where the standard of food may not be up to that in the restaurants he's been looking at this morning, but I'm sure we'll still have a great family meal. (Mum had better behave herself though, as I suspect one or two of us are queuing up...!)

GOT ALL CHOKED UP THIS MORNING...

... seeing James trying on his suit for the wedding.

We hadn't planned to go with them, but as I'd changed my plans at the last minute it left us with some free time. Glad we went, but an indication of what will be a very emotional day next June.

Stopped for a light lunch at Stewart and Co in Jesmond. Thanks for introducing yet another fab eating place to us Jim!

Back home now, going to give my car a wash in a while. but may take my book outside for a while first.

OH HOW YOU JEST...

... DANNYMATT!!

Tee hee!!

DANNYMATT!

I asked you loads of questions and you are NOT being helpful!!

Yes - that's the one, but I saw it on the Sam Allen site - clearly they're not the successful agent!

Am disappointed that it's gone. Don't know why because we're not going anywhere! We love Fram and would really struggle to find anywhere that suits our needs as much as this bungalow does, so nothing lost really.

A WATCHED BLOG...

... NEVER BOILS!!

COME ON DANNYMATT... I NEED TO KNOW!!!!

WAS SUPPOSED TO ...

... be having my make up done at the Dior counter by make up artist extraordinaire, David, today - but have postponed it until we get back from the hols.

The idea anyway, was to give my some tips for James and Claire's wedding - but as I have no idea what colour I'll be wearing, it seems a trifle premature.

Talking about the holiday - in a fortnight's time we'll be well on our way and will have had our overnight stop in Reims. I AM looking forward to it, of course I am, but I still can't get past the thought of leaving the girls. Do other dog/pet owners put themselves through this agony, or is it just me? I know they are going to have a great time, but I just feel so guilty about leaving them! (Rose is NOT helping right now as she's lying on the rug by my feet, rolling over and over for attention and looking SOOOO cute!!)

GET UP DANNYMATT...

... I need answers!

OKAY, BACK TO THE REAL WORLD...

... dannymatt thinks the dream house is already sold! This will come as something of a relief to Charles, but is more than a little disappointing to me.

Can't wait to find out how he knows - and if indeed it is dannymatt himself who has bought it. Will be a touch of the green eyed monster if that is the case!!

STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT!!!!!!!!

STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT!!!
Right, let me make this clear.

I LOVE our house - well, bungalow.

It is PERFECT for us - AND for the girls.

We've spent loads of money getting it JUST RIGHT.

So WHY, when I was busy looking at potential properties for a very good friend of ours, did I fall COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY IN LOVE with a terraced, four-bedroom house in Felton, with a terraced back garden leading to a stream, stripped wood floors, a fab kitchen with THREE OVENS and SIX BURNERS, four double bedrooms, a lovely dining room on the ground floor, sunroom and a fab lounge on the first floor AND A BATHROOM WITH FREE-STANDING, ROLLTOP BATH THAT IS TO DIE FOR???

WHY DID I EVEN LOOK?

WHY DID I BOOKMARK IT, SO THAT I CAN KEEP LOOKING AT THE FABULOUS PICTURES, IMAGINING WHERE OUR FURNITURE WILL (WOULD) GO? (We'd need to buy another double bed, and probably a dishwasher and all new curtains, BUT THAT'S ALL!)

WHY AM I TORTURING MYSELF?

Charles has made it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that we're NOT MOVING and to be honest, when I woke up this morning, nothing was further from my mind...

... BUT NOW I'VE MENTALLY MOVED INTO MAIN STREET. FELTON.

AAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!

WAITING AGAIN!!

Once more waiting for Xtina, who was supposed to be here at 7.30 to collect the presents she left behind on Tuesday. Not holding my breath on this one.

Going to get some gardening done today. Apart from that, not planning much else.

JUST TAKEN THE GIRLS...

... for their first spin in the new car!

The back seat is just Westie-sized and is now furnished with two cosy beds and a little (obviously carefully colour-coordinated) blanket, just in case it gets chilly when the top's down!

We've got these clever little dog seat belts that attach to their harnesses and keep them securely in place without being too restricted.

We tried them with the roof down (Top Down, Looking the Part) and they were absolutely fine.

So, all we need now are a couple of tiny bandanas to help avoid that windswept look...

... and we're good to go!

(Only joking about the bandanas, by the way!)

MATRICIDE...

... how common is this?

Just wondering, that's all!

GOOD...

...MORNING!!!

As in "Good morning" hope you're all rested and refreshed after a good night's sleep, not "Good Morning" as in it's been a great start to the day.

PLEASANT EVENING, ALTHOUGH...

... James was pretty tired and had to deal with some work calls while he was here. Still, the girls enjoyed having him here and both enjoyed the fuss he made of them.

Tried to watch "Sherlock" - but kept nodding off, so am off to bed to read for a while.

AND THE BAD NEWS IS...

... we've got so much ground cover ivy in the back garden, that we will lose the hedge within two years unless we can get rid of it.

So, a trip to Heighley Gate to get a weedkiller specifically for ivy is on the agenda for tomorrow.

Chris has done a really good job of cutting everything back and tidying up. In fact the garden looks much bigger! He's cut down the cordyline that suffered so badly during the winter, leaving a neat stumpy clump, which may or may not grow again. If it doesn't at least it'll be easier to dig out now.

And, the creeper that I first noticed last year and has reappeared this year with a vengeance is, in fact, 'Morning Glory' - it's happily choking everything in it's path, or it was until I took drastic action this afternoon and hopefully got rid of most of it. May need to get more weedkiller for that tomorrow as well.

It is, however, going to 'chuck it down' tomorrow and for the next few days (which is why he came today, of course) so may have to do any treatments when there is a period of dry weather forecast again.

THE SUN'S JUST PUT IN AN APPEARANCE!

This is most welcome.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to sit out with my book, lapping it up (neither the sun, nor the book), because the man who cuts our trees back has decided that it is the perfect time to get on with it and is wielding his chainsaw with total abandon and considerable decibels around the garden.

I've been longing for him to come and get the garden tidied up - but wish he could have made it a day when I didn't want to sit outside! (I know, I know - some people are NEVER happy!)

IF YOU HAVEN'T READ...

... "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" - you really must.

I'm now onto the second book in the Millennium Series and the third one is already on standby.

Sadly Stieg Larsson died before his three manuscripts were published and didn't live to see how successful they were.

NOT ACTUALLY...

... doing anything today, really.

Can't settle to much, not over-enthusiastic about going out anywhere.

Looking forward to seeing James this evening - at least that should be easy-going and relaxed!

Nothing much to report at all.

SOUNDS LIKE...

... there will be a big family get together on Sunday.

In Yorkshire, probably the Cow and Calf for lunch, then a mooch around Ilkley, maybe even cakes at Bettys! Yum!!

MORNING AFTER...

... THE NIGHT BEFORE!

Still reeling from a horrendous evening. Trying to calm down, but it's taking time.

Charles was going to go to his Mum's in Preston today, but has delayed it until next week. I'm going to see if my sister fancies coming up to spend a couple of days here while he's away, so we can have a bit of girly time.

We thought we might take the girls out for a long walk somewhere today, but haven't decided where yet. Once again, its not a brilliant day weather-wise, so I don't think it'll be the beach, but Ingram Valley's a possibility.

To be honest, I don't feel up to making even the simplest decision today.

YEAH...

...we did get to Marabinis, I just forgot to publish before we left, so did it when we got back and then had four minutes to think about the awfulness of the whole evening. Feel physically ill now - and it's got nothing to do with the amount of food and wine I consumed.

IT WAS...

... a disaster.

PRESENTS DONE...

... and she likes them! (Phew)

Off to Marabinis now - or at least when she gets off the phone.

"I'LL BE THERE IN FIVE MINUTES,"

...said Christina, an hour ago.

Is she here yet?

????????????

CHRISTINA'S BIRTHDAY TODAY

31 years - where has it gone?

I still remember every detail of that day, as if it were yesterday!

We may be seeing her later - it'll be the first time we've got together in quite some time. Hopefully, she'll enjoy her day.

We're planning a day trip to Yorkshire on Sunday, with James and Claire, to meet up with the extended family before everyone sets off on their hols. Haven't got all the details sorted yet, but should be a good day. Hope my brother and his family will be around to meet Claire as this still hasn't happened yet.

Today - got to go into Morpeth, then onto James's work to drop cakes off and then doing very little until we meet up with Christina.

VERY FRUSTRATING DAY TODAY

Been stuck inside, waiting for the coffee machine to be collected. It was supposed to go by 10am but the reality was that it was some time after 4.00 by the time it went. As Charles was out at school, I had little choice but to hang around.

Did make some fab ginger cupcakes and a batch of my all time favourites - pear and dark chocolate. James wants some for work tomorrow!

Must go - strange noises are coming out of the girls room. Either they're knocking seven bells out of each other, or they've got something in there with them that's taking a bit of a beating! 'Scuse me...

TWITTER

Think this may be a step too far for me.

Can't get my head round it.

Very confused.

Thought it might help raise the profile of Cakes A-Go-Go, but not sure how anything works, so may not be going on there much at all.

FIRST REAL DAY OF THE HOLS...

... and Charles is going to school!

Great.

Still, better to get all the ends tied up now, rather than leaving it till later in the holidays, I suppose.

As for me - dunno really. Haven't got any cake orders at the moment, so very quiet on that front.

Will probably finish Dragon Tattoo - what a great read it's turning out to be!

CHICKEN TIKKA SHASLICK...

... seemed like a good idea at the time.

Now feeling very stuffed.

Of course the fact that it was preceded by poppadoms AND lamb samosas probably didn't help!

Eyes bigger than tummy, obviously.

GOING OUT FOR...

... lunch with James and Claire today. Don't know where yet, but we're not exactly short of places to choose from.

Charles has just set up a twitter account for Cakes A-Go-Go. I haven't got a clue about twitter and tweeting, but if it brings in a few orders that'll be good.

WHEN...

... is it going to warm up?

Have just been outside, and it feels more like February than July.

What a sad couple of days. First the Norway thing, and then the news about Amy Winehouse. Somehow though, there was no real surprise about Amy. A terrible waste of a life, but there has been an inevitability about the outcome for a long time.

THIS HAS BEEN...

... the laziest day I've had for weeks!

Apart from a shopping trip this morning and taking the girls out for a walk, I have done absolutely nothing apart from read 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' a book I tried to get into a few months ago, gave up after about ten pages, only to discover on re-reading that the intrigue starts on about page 11 - am really enjoying it now!

I HAD MY FIRST HOLIDAY ABROAD...

... in Norway. I was about thirteen and I went with the Harding family under tragic circumstances. We knew the family from church and I was good friends with the daughter, Christine. Her brother, Stephen, had died earlier in the year when he was skating on the frozen river at Stakeford and fell through the ice. My father accompanied Eric Harding to identify the body when it was found, three weeks later.

The holiday was a mixture of fun and great sadness, as the family had previously visited the country the year before and had bittersweet memories of their time there together.

For me, it was a huge adventure. This was in the days before my seasickness kicked in, and sailing across the North Sea to Stavanger on SS Leda posed no problem at all.

I was blown away by the rugged and beautiful scenery and distinctly remember Christine and I having a snowball fight on the Jostedal Glacier whilst wearing our bikinis - it was so surreal.

My lasting impression of the Norwegians was their polite, gentle manner and quiet humour. The country was spotless, stunning and so peaceful.

It is heartbreaking to think of the impact the events of yesterday will have had on the nation.

SAD, SAD DAY...

... in Norway.

All those who died - RIP

INDIAN TAKEAWAY...

... BEING PICKED UP RIGHT NOW!

AM STARVING - BUT FORTUNATELY NOT FOR MUCH LONGER!

FEEL BETTER NOW...

... that I've cleaned out all the fridges and thrown out loads of stuff that was way past it's 'use by' date. All organise again now, which is always good.

The morning's excursion was going really well until we got to Morpeth and Charles decided to have his eyes tested. TWO HOURS later, he was finished, but there appears to be a bit of a problem with pressure behind his right eye and POSSIBLY the beginnings of cataracts which isn't so good. He's got to return in the morning for another check.

Number plates are on, insurance company notified of the change, so all legal in that department.

Started shopping for Christina's birthday, although we don't know whether we'll be seeing her or not. (Don't ask!)

The girls are being remarkably patient with us as we rush around doing all those odd jobs that you put off as long as possible, but can't avoid altogether.

I'm going to tart mentioning little snippets about the girls so that by the time dannymatt comes for them in August he'll be fully briefed about all their little foibles.

Today's snippet concerns feeding. They still have two meals a day. Rose is ALWAYS ready for breakfast, but Lily is less bothered. I do however offer them both exactly the same meal and watch while Rose scoffs hers and Lily SOMETIMES demolishes hers, but quite often just toys with it. I need to watch them carefully because, although Lily may not be bothered, until she has finally made her mind up that she's going to leave it, she would take Rose's head off if she shows any interest in the contents of the bowl. Once Lily has moved away, this leaves the route clear for Rose to polish it off. This is not a good thing as she will end up getting fat, so as soon as Lily has finished, I get rid of the contents. Rose always looks disapproving as if she thinks I'm being wasteful, but it's for her own good.

Tea time is enjoyed by both girls. Lily won't need any persuading to eat that meal.

Uh - one other snippet: Occasionally both girls, but Lily especially, do this weird 'reverse breathing' thing. It sounds a bit scary, as if they're gasping for breath, but it only lasts a few seconds and doesn't seem to cause them any discomfort. It's nothing to worry about, but you need to be aware in case it happens on your watch.

Right, that's enough snippets for today!

EARLY START...

... as we're off to DVLA Gosforth to get the final paperwork done before I can put my numberplate on the new car. Danielle, from Evans Halshaw, is meeting us thee and will put the plates on for us.

After that we're got lots of little things to do - quick visit to the bank, round to James's work, into Morpeth and then home to do other chores that have just stacked up during the past week.

The girls are fed and walked and will be having a nice sleepy morning while we're rushing around like mad things. Lucky them!

AND SO...

... the school holidays begin.

Charles has staggered in under the weight of all his thank you gifts and is now telling me little anecdotes about everyone who has expressed their appreciation - this could take a while!

TYPICAL!

The staff at Croftway must have hot-footed it out of school today - I've already had the alarm company on the phone saying the alarm's going off!

BIT LATE...

... for a first post today, but needed to get quite a bit done this morning. Finished an order of 4 quiches and a box of cupcakes, finished two celebration cakes and put a box of cakes together to give as a thank you gift for the girl from Evans Halshaw who's fitting my number plate tomorrow morning.

Feel quite pleased with myself actually.

I've just got back from a walk with the girls that was punctuated by the booms from the heavy guns over at the range. I honestly cannot imagine what it must be like to live in Otterburn. I wonder if complimentary ear-defenders come with each house sale.

JUST REALISED...

... it's Christina's birthday next Tuesday. We haven't seen her for quite a while now, but I think I should make a cake for her, seeing as I make them for everyone else!

I've popped a Madeira cake in the oven and will start work on it tomorrow.

On another topic - how miserable is this weather? The girls are totally naffed off - they've even got fed up expressions when they gaze out of the window at the rain! I can't believe it's mid-summer and I've got all the lights on, the heating on AND a thick sweater.

Roll on France - let's hope they're having a better time of it over there.

ONE COFFEE MACHINE...

... duly delivered.

Still in box awaiting unpacking, but I'm going to wait until Charles has returned to collect the next batch of buffet stuff before I attempt to wade through the polystyrene chips and other assorted packaging material.

Everything is now done for the buffet. I just hope Charles remembers to bring the crates back as there's no way we'll manage without them!

Hope it goes well this afternoon and that Carol enjoys her 'do'. It'll be a bittersweet moment for her I know.

I agree dannymatt - she is an absolute treasure and the children, parents and staff at Croftway have been very lucky to have her.

OPEN KIMONO BABY!

Priceless!

Love it!

LAST THREE COMMENTS...

... from dannymatt.

Yes - I agree - to all of them!

(Haven't got time to go into more detail just now - up to my eyes in banoffis and pavlovas!)

Tuesday, 19 July 2011

DANNYMATT!

Hope you're going to the buffet at Croftway tomorrow. I would like your opinion of the cake!

NEW COFFEE MACHINE...

... despatched and due for delivery tomorrow. Get in!!!

Can't fault Amazon for that sort of service.

ALL DONE...

... for today.

Just the last minute stuff to do in the morning and then we're good to go, as they say.

Managed to get the girls booked into the doggie hairdressers for 8th August (Charles's birthday) so they'll be all nice and smart for their hols with dannymatt.

Might have a look at the NUFC boards now...

... Oh wait a minute, there's no point is there?

STRANGE!

I actually published the last post about three hours ago, just before I started work.

having decided to take a coffee break I checked the blog, only to find that 'conflicting edits' had prevented it being published.

So, don't go thinking that I've only just started working. It's been three hours of hard graft I tell thee.

And now, all one hundred cupcakes are baked, frosted and decorated. Two dozen have been delivered and the rest are going to be crated up ready for the buffet tomorrow.

Next I'm going to make tiny cheese scones which will be topped with an onion relish and cream cheese and chive swirly thing to finish!

Right - coffee beckons...

VERY, VERY...

... busy day coming up.

Dozens of cupcakes and little fiddly pastries.

Be back later!!

THREE CHEERS FOR AMAZON...

HIP HIP...

Having had absolutely no joy from Delonghi, Charles got in touch with those nice folks at Amazon (as that is where we actually purchased the coffee machine) and they agreed immediately to a replacement machine which should arrive on Wednesday.

No fuss, no excuses, just a practical and quick solution.

...HOORAY!

ACTUALLY...

... I don't feel any better now.

Didn't wait till 9.00 - rang at 8'30 and got the very pleasant and understanding Amanda who was hugely sympathetic, but, of course, referred me to Amazon for a replacement machine.

In the meantime, labels are being despatched for the return of the machine, should Amazon refuse to act.

It is working just fine now.

I'm in serious danger of caffeine overdose actually.

High as a kite, in fact!

OKAAAAY...

... IT'S DECIDED TO WORK NOW!?!

What on earth is going on?

Charles and I both attempted to get a response from it first thing, but had no success at all. Half an hour later, it decides to function perfectly normally.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN, HOWEVER, THAT DELONGHI ARE OFF THE HOOK.

No-one should have to put up with a machine that only operates when it feels like it.

So, while I wait for the switchboard to open, I'll just make another cup of coffee!

DELONGHI - GET READY FOR THIS!

At 9am I will be on the phone to DeLonghi.

I DON'T want to talk to a mere minion, I want to speak to someone with the authority to send out an immediate replacement for my YET AGAIN KNACKERED COFFEE MACHINE.

It won't be a pleasant conversation.

I WILL be threatening them with Trading Standards and Watchdog. I have got a full history of the debacle to date and will willingly use this to name and shame the crappy company who have yet again let us down.

That bloody machine came back on Friday, NO FAULT FOUND, and this morning it won't power up again.

I am absolutely livid, and would not wish to be the person on the other end of the phone at 9 o'clock this morning.

Sunday, 17 July 2011

THE GIRLS DO NOT LIKE...

... THUNDERSTORMS!

NOT ONE BIT!

They've had a mega-panic this afternoon. Haven't known where to put themselves, despite all our reassurances.

OH B****R!!!

GUESS WHO'S BEEN PUTTING ALL THE LILY AND ROSE POSTS ON THE CAKES-A-GO-GO BLOG BY MISTAKE!

Yes - that would be ME!

I thought Dannymatt's comment was strange, so had a quick look and sure enough, no recent posts - but they are over on the other blog. I must have completely forgotten to sign out of one and into the other!!

Anyway - back to normal now.

Just back from a really wasted trip to town. Charles wanted to go to the last day of Fenwick's sale. We sat at the Haymarket traffic lights for forty minutes watching total mayhem in front of us as drivers completely ignored the yellow hatched areas AND the no car lane, causing total chaos. We sat, first in the queue, at the lights and simply couldn't move because of the idiots in front who had absolutely no regard for anyone else on the road.

Eventually got parked and headed for the shops, only to find...

...absolutely nothing!

Not a thing, bugger all!

Didn't even get a coffee because everywhere so too busy, so just came home, annoyed and frustrated.

Thursday, 14 July 2011

IT'S BACK!!

The coffee machine, that is.

Annoyingly, it was pretty scruffy when I got it unwrapped. Clearly it's been used while it's been in for 'repair' and no-one had bothered to clean the coffee grains from the tray at the bottom, so that was a bit annoying.

It HAS made one cup of coffee. So far, so good.
Not, however, filled with confidence. Will update you with further coffee related news as and when.

NEARLY THE END OF...

... term!

Just a week to go.

And then just a month to wait until we go on our jollies to France. Can't believe it's come round so fast.

Still having guilty agonies about leaving my girls - but a break will do them (and us) good I'm sure.

Charles has just rung from school to say that he had to slam his brakes on this morning and the cake he was transporting slid in it's box, breaking the corner of the little coffee table I'd added. I wouldn't care if I hadn't specifically told him to be extra careful with it exactly because I knew the cloth extended slightly over the edge of the board and would be vulnerable to knocks. Apparently it's only a little break, but I feel very disappointed now - I hate to think someone's getting a cake that's damaged.

Going to Morpeth in a while and then have nothing else planned for today. I'm getting quite anxious about the buffet for next week and distinctly recall saying, after the last one, that I wouldn't be doing any more of them. The problem isn't the cooking, but the fact that so much of it needs to be done on the day and the rush to get everything boxed up is pretty manic. Still - I'm sure it'll get done.

Wednesday, 13 July 2011

AND ISN'T IT TYPICAL...

... that amongst all the transfer dealings and speculation, they only real, confirmed NUFC news is that Joey barton and Nile Ranger have been refused permits for the USA trip!

HOWEVER...

...Got the documents I've been waiting for from DVLA this morning, so that's good.

WELL, GUESS WHAT?

The people at deLonghi can find absolutely nothing wrong with the coffee machine and have therefore done nothing to it and are sending it back. They've been enjoying lots of cups of coffee while it's been in their possession and it hasn't failed them yet.

Well, lucky you, is all I can say.

BUSIER DAY...

... on the cards today - thank goodness.

I've got the current cake (Not 'CURRANT' cake, it's actually chocolate) carved and covered and almost ready for the finishing touches. I'm pretty excited about this one. Don't get me wrong, I love doing ALL the cakes I'm asked to make and I remember the details of every single one - BUT this one is going to be a little beaut - I hope!

It'll probably take most of the day to add those finishing touches, so I'll be back on later this afternoon to let you know how it's gone.

Tuesday, 12 July 2011

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGH

NO COFFEE MACHINE

NOTHING FROM DVLA

NO NEWCASTLE NEWS

NO SUNSHINE

...............................!

NOTHING MUCH...

... to report today.

Mind you, it's early yet, so that may change. (Or, if it's a day like yesterday, maybe not!)

Monday, 11 July 2011

THIS HAS GOT TO HAVE BEEN...

... the longest day I've had for ages.

It's really dragged.

I suspect it's because I'm kind of in Cake Limbo for a couple of days, before getting to grips with a rather special cake for Croftway AND a buffet for 70 for next week. I ought to be enjoying a bit of quiet time as it's certainly the lull before the storm, but, you know me, never was any good at all at this relaxing business, unless I'm in the sun somewhere warm with a good book, a drink close at hand and the pool a hop and a skip away.

Mind you, the girls have enjoyed lots of attention today and are currently on 'Dad Watch' as they anticipate his return!

BORED...

... THAT'S ALL.

TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR

That's what we've got right now, typically as I was just planning to take my current novel outside.

I think dannymatt was right the other day. However illogical it may be, the weather has certainly taken a turn for the worse since I got my new car.

I do recall that exactly the same happened when I got the MG. We'd had a fab Easter and late Spring. I bought the car, drove it with the hood down once and that was it for the summer. In fact I think that was the year of the dreadful Summer floods. Be afraid!!

CHARLES HAS...

... returned to work today - a week before he is supposed to, but he says he's feeling a lot better. It's been a really nasty virus. Hopefully it's out of his system now.

As for me today - it's another day of WAITING. Coffee machine, DVLA stuff, sugarpaste delivery...

I don't do WAITING well to be honest!

Sunday, 10 July 2011

TOP DOWN...

... looking the part (or "Looking a fart" as James would say in reference to a certain obese man we used to know!)

Went to Morpeth for coffee and brunch (Charles had brunch - I didn't cos I'm being very good)

It was my turn for a lie in today, so got up at 7.45 feeling as if I'd wasted half the day! Still managed to get all the chores done AND finish the piano cake by midday, even with the extended coffee break.

Don't know what to do now. Might have to watch the Grand Prix or even read the last ever edition of the News of the World, which is something of a turn up as I never read any of the previous editions. Hey ho!

Saturday, 9 July 2011

GOING TO MEET...

... James for coffee in Morpeth in a little while, although we'll not be sitting outside Central Bean as it's chucking it down again.

Had another good morning and have now practically completed all the bits for Carol's retirement cake. I'm really looking forward to assembling this one!

Baked the chocolate sponge for the piano cake first thing today. It'll be settled enough to start working on by tomorrow.

Right, better go and find an umbrella I think!

I'M UP!

So where's everyone else?

Been up for an hour actually - far too early for a Saturday.

Looking grey and overcast out there today. Come on - it's July for God's sake! I've got a convertible car that needs some sunshine!

(Still no coffee machine OR DVLA papers for my number plate - BOOOOO!!)

Friday, 8 July 2011

DEEP-FRIED CAKE!

Sounds delicious. Mind you - I've never even tried a deep-fried Mars bar, so clearly haven't lived!

I SWEAR...

...I just don't know where today has gone. Mind you I can account for forty minutes of it which were completely wasted at traffic lights on the A697 - FORTY MINUTES, I kid you not. Could have made a cake in the time I was sitting there!

Hiya Dannymatt!!

Thrilled to hear about Neil's cake. If Wendy took any photos, ask her to either post them on facebook or send them to my email - IF she doesn't mind.

I hope they all had a great time together. It's about time Wendy had something good to remember.

STILL WAITING...

... for the DVLA to send the paperwork for my personal number plate. This is just a bit annoying as I've now got to the end of the week's free insurance arranged by the garage and have to insure the car myself on it's current plate, only to have to do it all over again when the plates are changed - at a cost of course.

Also still waiting for the nice folks at DeLonghi to get our coffee machine back to us. It's been away since Monday, so I would have thought there might be a chance of having it returned by the end of the week. Really disappointed with the way things have worked out with this machine. If DeLonghi have anything about them they will surely offer us a replacement machine if there is any doubt whatsoever about this one? Or maybe not!

Going shopping this morning - hopefully before the downpours that are forecast for later on today. After that, it'll be back to modelling stuff for the retirement cake - it's going to be a beaut!!

PRODUCTIVE DAY TODAY!

I had a bit of a battle with the characters for the piano cake and ended up throwing the first attempt away and starting again, so wasted a couple of hours this morning. Mind you, since then, I've been on a bit of a roll and have prepared loads of stuff for the retirement cake that's coming up shortly.

Need to go shopping tomorrow as we really don't seem to have anything in the house to make a meal with!

WES BROWN!!

Or "the Baked Bean" as James used to refer to him! Seems to have been around forever. Can't say I'm too bothered if the unwashed are buying stuff like that.

BUT - I WOULD like some news about US. It's all getting very frustrating and beginning to follow the usual pattern of transfer windows ie nothing will happen until the last day, when we'll probably put the entire squad up for sale.

Can you tell I'm a "glass half empty" sort of person!!

WHEN WILL THERE BE...

... ANY NEWCASTLE TRANSFER NEWS?????

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!

CHILLI WRAPS

James' request as he's here for his dinner. Haven't made chilli for ages. Don't know why not, because I've really enjoyed it this evening.

Thanks for suggesting it Jim!

Right now, Lily is lying on the sofa, next to James, flat on her back having her tummy rubbed. She's in her element!

Rose, on the other hand, is watching a repeat of Top Gear. She KNOWS that there are dogs in this programme and is about an inch away from the screen just waiting for it to appear!

Oh, right on cue - dog appears. Mayhem ensues! Lily is disgruntled because she has to leave her blissful pampering in order to check for intruder dogs round the back of the TV. Not finding any, she then has to chew her sister's ear in a fit of pique, before returning to James to resume the tummy rub.

ACTUALLY...

... I DID have the hood down when I came back from Morpeth. Just happened to find a gap in the cloud cover.

Have spent the day working on the 90th birthday cake, but have got to the point where I can't do any more until I know what sort of greeting is required.

The girls have had pretty much an indoors day today. This is fine, but we usually have an outbreak of bonkers behaviour round about now when they've been cooped up for any length of time. One or other will begin goading her sister into chasing about, up and down the living room...

... and listening to the excited little yappy barks emanating from Rose's direction I'd say it's just about to kick off!!!

WOW

What a change in the weather. Very wet, grey and miserable - won't be going out with the top down today!

BACK ON MY LAPTOP...

... so need to reply to dannymatt here.

Delighted the cake survived the journey AND that Neil appreciated it. A loose letter can be stuck back in place with a smear of plain old tapwater (in the absence of edible glue, which I'm guessing Wendy doesn't have about her person!)- just needs holding in place for a few seconds and will be as good as new.

Good news from the hospital today. Charles clearly has a virus after all, so that's something of a relief to say the least. Presumably he'll begin to feel less exhausted over the next few days as it works its way out of his system.

Also - good news about my Mum, who has also been to hospital today having her skin graft, and the site from where the skin was taken, checked. She is healing really well apparently and can now actually wash her hair, which I know will be a great relief to her. I'm guessing she won't be having a perm any time soon though!

BUSY MORNING!

Finished the piano - what a pain that keyboard was! And if anyone DARES to count the keys, there'll be trouble!!

Got two fruitcakes marzipaned and made piano stool, coffee table, teapot, cup and saucer and cherry cake, petanque set, got books ready for adding children's stories, cruise holidays and piano scores. Quite an eclectic mix!

Just got to wait for the sugardough which will arrive tomorrow, so I can make the characters.

Not too bad for a morning's work.

APART FROM...

... making a piano, I haven't really done much today.

I finished the book I'd started on Saturday - the one I thought I'd read - and I do still think I've read it, but I'd completely forgotten the plot and the ending, so nothing spoiled. (It's not like me to forget a good book - and this really WAS a good read, so it's not as if it was a forgettable storyline - don't know what's going on. Clearly senior moments!)

Charles has been to the doctors today and has been signed off for a further two weeks. Hopefully the tests will come back okay and will show that it's just been a really nasty virus.

COFFEE MACHINE...

... all packed up AGAIN and ready to be picked up sometime today. It's going straight to DeLonghi this time, not just to their recommended repairers, so we'll hopefully have it back and fully functioning by the end of the week. In the meantime, Central Bean here I come!

Got another couple of cake orders this weekend - a retirement cake and a birthday cake for a grandad who enjoys playing the piano with his grandson - now THAT'S going to be a challenge!! Will need to start thinking about it pretty quickly as it's due to go in a couple of weeks, so not long to build my Steinway!

ACTUALLY...

...apart from all the sporting disappointments, it's been a really lovely weekend.

The weather has been pretty much perfect, although I see we have one more day of sunshine forecast and then it breaks down again.

The girls, however, have been little horrors today. I think they were a bit miffed that we kept them out of the way when dannymatt was here while we all had a chat - they wanted to be in on it too and certainly made their somewhat removed presence known. Even after he'd left, they have been really unsettled all day. Very odd.

(Ross Noble's on 'Top Gear' right now - he is just SO funny. Love him!)

I WANTED...

Murray to win - he didn't.
Hayes to win - neither did he.
Now I want Rafa to win - but unless he sorts himself out during this fourth set, it's not going to happen either.

HOW ANNOYING IS IT...

... when you start to read a book and within a few pages realise you THINK it seems familiar and you MAY have read it before, but can't remember the storyline, so have to keep reading in the knowledge that by the time you get almost to the end you will have remembered - thus spoiling the surprise and suspense?

WENT OUT FOR A SPIN...

...this morning.

Really happy with the new car. Easy to open the roof, loads of space for the weekly shop, doesn't rattle about as much as the MG used to. Very pleased.

Went to Central Bean for a decent cappuccino as withdrawal symptoms have well and truly set in now.

Raided M and S for meal deals and new summer clothes.

Got back home and now have the fragrant scent of gingerbread wafting through the house. Yummmmmmmmm!!

ONE GRADUATION CAKE...

... PRETTY MUCH FINISHED NOW!

It'll be ready for delivery on Monday Dannymatt, along with the rest of your goodies.

Have just made some fab chocolate and pear cupcakes. I'd forgotten about these; used to make them quite a bit but then moved onto other things, but they are really yummy and actually must count towards the good old 'five a day' as there are no less than five Conference pears in the mix. Healthy cupcakes - way to go!!

IN MY FURY YESTERDAY...

... I completely forgot to mention that I swopped my mini yesterday for a Peugeot 207 convertible!

I'd been thinking about it fr a while, but didn't want to go down the sports car, soft top route again, so chose something that gives me the flexibility of both hard and open tops at the touch of a button and has a fair amount of boot space and even a tiny seat on the back for extra storage space (or very short people, or little dogs)

The car is just less than two years old, has 15,000 miles on the clock. The garage are sorting out my personal plates and these should be sorted by next week.

So there was some good stuff happening yesterday, it's just that it got overshadowed by the ridiculous DeLonghi situation, which despite Charles's phone call to them this morning still looks likely to drag on for at least a further week. We have zero confidence that it is going to be rectified to be honest.
