VOTE FOR JOE?
Helen and I did! It's the first time I've EVER phoned in to one of these talent show things - but I shall continue to vote for him because I think he's great!
I have to say though, I think it's really mean to make the one who's just been voted out sing again. It was bad enough when they had to sing to stay in, but once they know they're out I think it's a bit hard on them.

REMEMBER ME?
Gosh - it seems AGES since I was able to sit down and write a proper post!
Obviously the weekend was pretty busy with having helen and Bill here, but they've left now, so the girls and I are settling back into our usual routine, ie they're fast asleep and I'm rushing round doing the chores!
I'm glad we're not needing to go out today, because the weather is awful again. The showers are very definitely wintery now and we've had some sleety stuff this morning.
I wonder what the puppies will think of snow?!
The pups have been little stars this weekend. They've had their excitable moments, but have been quick to calm down and have been lovely and sociable with their visitors. Rose is turning into a bit of a lapdog (when she's given a chance), but doesn't like it at all when Lily is given the same affection - so we're going to have to keep an eye on that. ('Mrs Jealous Knickers' was what Helen was calling her this morning!) Lily has been a joy. She is becoming so quick to please and to obey commands. They haven't needed a lot of attention either and really seem to be growing up all of a sudden. We're very proud of them both!
Well, while they're asleep, I'm going for a cuppa.
Be back later!!!

WET AND WILD
That's what the weather has been like today. Absolutely miserable, it's never really been light - the perfect day for going to town really.
Helen, Bill and I set off early thinking the shops would open at 10am, only to find that nothing actually opens until 11 on a Sunday. Actually, I tell a lie, Fenwicks were open at 10.30 - but you can't actually pay for anything until 11. What a pain!!
Never mind, we were not thwarted. We enjoyed coffee in Starbucks, then sauntered round until it was time to start serious shopping. Poor Bill was going to go to the newly refurbished Hancock Museum (the last time he tried to do this, he got to the door and was told it had just closed. When he asked when it would be open again, he was told - in two years time!!!!!) However, he is obviously not meant to get in at all, because when he turned up at ten o'clock this morning, he discovered that it doesn't open until two on a Sunday, so he had to come shopping instead! Anyway, we all managed to get lots of stuff from our lists and were able to cross these off merrily as we enjoyed our lunch. We managed another hour of spending money after lunch, then all decided we'd had enough and went home with a quick stop on the way at Heighley Gate.
Charles meanwhile had spent the morning with the puppies. He also managed to get a new video posted. Thanks Charles, it's great. (I wonder what the pups would think if they knew that the black cat spends part of every morning in our back garden!!)

JUST OFF TO ...
...get my hair done again. It doesn't seem four weeks since I was last there.
Charles is looking after the pups this morning and has promised to try and get a new video posted.
I'm not sure if I'll meet Helen and Bill in Morpeth or whether I'll have to get home so that Charles can go and meet Jakes to go to the match. They're planning on having lunch in town first, so I'm guessing they'll want to leave about 12ish.
Come on Toon PLEASE win today!

BATHTIME
Good grief that was hard work!!
Both puppies have been bathed. Charles did the washing - one pup at a time as we'd agreed - but this proved somewhat traumatic for both puppies as they hated being separated and could tell that something different was happening.
However, they are now spotlessly clean, blow dried and combed - and look stunningly fabulous! The funny thing is that when they're dry Rose looks twice the size of Lily because of her amazingly fluffy coat. But when they're wet they are absolutely identical - in fact it's really hard to tell them apart.
Now we're just letting them have a few minutes to make sure they are really, properly dry. Actually they're both snuggled up on Charles's knee, looking very drowsy, so it won't be long before bedtime.

BACK TO THE WATER BOWL GAME
The more often you can play it the better.
It's especially good if you let your mum mop the floor and get it all nice and dry - then you have another go! He he he!!!

DID YOU KNOW THAT...
... four weeks today is Christmas Day? (and James's birthday)
FOUR WEEKS!
How scary is that?
It's not so bad for me because I've got all the time in the world - but I remember in the days when I was a working person, I used to be getting quite stressed about now.
I wonder if the tradition of the staff shopping time will continue at my last school. It was a brilliant system, where colleagues covered for each other during the last week of term giving full time staff half a day to do last minute shopping - I think everyone really appreciated it! Some traditions should definitely be kept up, eh girls?? (Thats not 'girls' as in the puppies, but as in the staff!)
Just out of interest, has anyone been to the Metro Centre since they put their decorations up? I don't know what you thought, but James and I thought they were AWFUL. They actually look nothing at all like Christmas decorations, more like something weird from IKEA or even the set of some sci-fi film. Really strange!

AND THE LATEST GAME IN...
...THE PUPPIES COMPENDIUM IS...
LET'S SEE HOW MUCH WATER WE CAN SPILL ALL OVER OUR MUM'S FLOOR!
It's a good one this.
It doesn't require much in the way of equipment - just a water bowl, preferably one that has just been filled.
The object of the game is to be the first puppy to tip the water bowl up completely.
A second object is to see which puppy can trample in the flood the most and, by avoiding capture by our irate mum, make as many wet paw prints over as wide an area as possible.
A good strategy is to wait until the bowl has been placed on the floor and our mum's back is turned. Extra points are awarded if the bowl is tipped BEFORE she's even stood up after placing the bowl in the start position.
This is a really good game because both puppies can be winners. The best 'tipper' isn't necessarily the best 'trampler' - so go for it girls!

WELL...
Don't let me disturb you girls!
They managed to wake up just enough to go out for ablutions, come in for a quick lunch and then went straight back to bed.
This MUST be the teenage phase, mustn't it?

A WHOLE MORNING HAS PASSED...
... without me writing on the blog!
To be honest, I was all set to start writing at about 8 o'clock, but Rose had a bit of a poop disaster and I ended up doing some fairly major cleaning up. She will have a bath later!!
Actually the pups haven't had a bath for ages. The last time was when we decided to put them both in the big bath and ended up with something resembling a water fight, with two puppies scrabbling around and sliding up and down the length of the tub!
We have hopefully learned from this and will be more prepared come bathtime this evening. Firstly we will bath ONE PUPPY AT A TIME and secondly to avoid skidding around I have bought a pretty horrid, but very functional, non-slip bath/shower mat.
As James is coming round after work, I hope we might be able to persuade him to help out with this highly enjoyable (!) activity. So, Jim, if you're reading this - don't come round wearing anything decent tonight!
I got all excited when the post came today as there was a package from the spex people - but my hopes were raised falsely because they turned out to be for Charles and not for me.
We've had another busy morning. We popped into Morpeth to get the things I forgot yesterday. While in M and S I spotted a very nice little jacket on the sale rail that was just my size, so I decided to go and get the bits of food shopping first then I would go and get the jacket on my way out. BUT no sooner had I paid for my groceries and had a long chat with the cashier whose children I used to teach at Swarland, than the place was suddenly overrun with security staff and police and everyone was told to leave the store immediately! I've no idea what was going on, but I certainly wasn't going to be able to get my jacket! The thing is, there was only ONE and it was a really nice tweed, fitted style with a detachable fur collar, only £22 AND SOMEONE ELSE WILL HAVE BOUGHT IT BEFORE I GO BACK TOMORROW!! So, if you're in Morpeth Marks and Spencer's today - please keep your hands of that jacket on the sale rail!!!
The puppies have had a good sleep and are just going through the rather noisy process of waking up - lots of moans and groans and stretches, and then another few minutes kip. This will go on for a while until they realise that they need togo out for a wee and there is no putting it off any longer!!!

HAVEN'T GOT A CLUE...
... what to do for our meal this evening. I'm totally uninspired!!
It's typical isn't it - you go out and do a big food shop, then come home and find that you still haven't got the makings of a decent meal.
Foolishly I shopped for the weekend without remembering that there was still a day to get through first! I may just have to raid the freezer.
Talking of the freezer, I made a couple of fabulous Chocolate Orange Tortes this afternoon. One to try this weekend, and the other will do for Christmas as they can be frozen for a month or so. You actually use Terry's Dark Chocolate Oranges, along with a hefty slug of Cointreau to make the mousse, which obviously has eggs and cream added to it. Then you make a syrup with MORE COINTREAU and very thin slivers of orange peel into which you immerse sponge fingers (or Rich Tea biscuits). Line loaf tins with cling film, pour in alternate layers of mousse and soggy sponge and pop it into the freezer, remembering to take it out again no more than an hour before you want to serve it. Dead easy and very quick!
However, this still doesn't solve the problem of what to do for tea tonight!

KONGS ARE FAB
For anyone who doesn't know about KONGS (although I'm sure I've mentioned them before) they are hollow cones made of some indestructible material, that can be stuffed full of all sorts of doggy delights. Kongs keep your puppy/dog busy for AGES as they try to get every last morsel out of the centre. Lily and Rose are having their afternoon Kong treat now. Today the filling is cream cheese, cheddar cheese and a tiny bit of very well cooked sausage (The Best Old Fashioned Pork Sausage - no cheap rubbish for my girls!) And the girls are loving it!!
STILL NO SPEX
Where are they? I'm getting a bit fed up now. I really want them by the weekend - so HURRY UP AND GET THEM HERE!
We've been out to do the food shop this morning and my observation about this is that there were more old people than you could shake a stick at in Morrisons this morning. Judging from their trolleys, they were all doing their Christmas store cupboard shopping (and looking at the crates of booze that were being stashed away, some of them must be anticipating doing some major drinking as well which would probably make them even more of a liability than they already are.)
Of course you wouldn't really shake a stick at the old folk because they would probably all fall over - especially if it was one of THEIR sticks.)
BUT - there were simply hundreds of them. I even peered out of the window to see if someone had organised a special coach party for them. The queues were about ten deep and, of course, there were still about eight tills that weren't actually in use. Why do Morrisons do that? If you've got two thirds of the over-eighties from Northumberland in your shop for God's sake put a few more people on the tills. It's no good having staff stacking the shelves when you've got the elderly and infirm swarming en masse (well probably not swarming, more like shuffling really) around your already overcrowded store - you're just creating even more trip hazards and major chaos when people are trying to navigate their wheelchairs around the special offer drinks stands. Get your shelves stocked during the night seeing as you can't be bothered to stay open 24 hours like other forward thinking stores do.
And you old people - surely you've done enough shopping now, but if you HAVE got some more to do - get someone to help you do it on-line, then you can shop from the comfort of your wheelchair at home in the warm.

WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS...
HOW MANY STICKS OF CHEWING GUM DOES ALEX FERGUSON GET THROUGH EACH GAME?
DOES HE HAVE A SPECIAL CHEWING GUM MONITOR? (The MUFC equivalent of Terry Mac and the Mars Bars?)
AND...
...WAS HE CHEWING MORE FURIOUSLY THAN EVER DURING THE MATCH LAST NIGHT?

GOOD MORNING RICHARD!!!
How good is it to know that someone reads the blog in a morning!! (Even if it IS a Villa supporter!!!)
I totally agree with you about the video. Come on Charles - we demand a new one!! I DID mention it last night, but I think he was a bit preoccupied. But it IS time we had some new footage.
I have to say I chuckled at your Mike Ashley comments, Richard - you summed him up pretty well I think!

BIT OF ROLE REVERSAL
I'M watching the Man Utd match and Charles is watching Waterloo Road!!!
(This is because I'm in the puppies room and am only half watching the footie, while keeping a watchful eye on the girls and I don't want to watch Waterloo Road until I can relax properly - so I'll watch it when they've gone to bed!
Oh oh! Man U are 1 down! (Who are they playing anyway? Who's 'BES"?)

WHY ARE DISHWASHERS SO INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO FILL?
I mean, all that opening the door and putting dirty dishes inside - wouldn't you think the designers could come up with something a bit easier and more 'user friendly'?
Clearly I personally have mastered the art of filling the wretched thing, probably thanks to decades of practice and I have even managed the equally difficult task of EMPTYING it as well, though obviously this has the added chore of having to locate the proper places for all of the contents and this can be extremely hard.
Should dishwashers come with a health warning? It could say something like :WARNING LOADING THIS DISHWASHER MAY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH/CAUSE INCURABLE STRESS/KILL...
OH, HANG ON A MINUTE...
...MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, IT'S NOT ACTUALLY THAT DIFFICULT AFTER ALL.
Perhaps it's just MY HUSBAND who finds it thus. Possibly he is slightly retarded in the dishwasher loading department and that is why he NEVER manages to actually put anything into it. Even a teaspoon after he's made a drink, is left on the worktop instead of placed in the machine. Plates are left immediately above the door to the machine rather than actually placed within it. Clearly this is a case of dishwasher phobia and I should thank my lucky stars that it's not an affliction from which I suffer.

IT'S ONE OF THOSE EVENINGS WHEN...
... all you want to do is to curl up at home in the warm and lock the cold, wet and wind outside.
We've just had a really heavy hailstorm which the puppies didn't enjoy very much. Not that they were outside at the time, but they didn't like the noise! What wimps our girls are!!!
Charles has rung to say he's on his way home and the jacket potatoes are in the oven for tea - so all is well!!! I love the smell of baked potatoes - it's got to be the ultimate comfort food.
The puppies have got over the shock of the hailstorm and are grabbing forty winks and gathering their energy before they need to leap on Charles as soon as he sets foot through the door.
It's funny how the use of my time is changing as the pups get older. In the early days I never left their side and my world was confined to their little room, which is probably how I managed to write so much on the blog. Now that they are a bit more independent I find I have to devote much less time to their needs and consequently am able to do a lot more.
They're getting used to the idea that if they have been disturbed during a sleep they can go back to it, whereas at one time the least little disturbance meant they were up - and usually grumpy as well. Now they take their time and get up when they are good and ready.
Unfortunately, this doesn't apply to ME though. I STILL haven't had a single lie in since the day I retired, because we have got into the habit of going through to the pups at about 6.45. Obviously during the week Charles has to be up at that time and if HE'S up so are the puppies, but we haven't risked leaving them longer at the weekend yet. I suppose, in theory, if they went to bed later, they should be able to last till later in the morning without needing a wee. Maybe we'll give it a try - but first I would have to get them to stay awake longer in the evening and I know from experience that this is no easy task!

WHEN DO PUPPIES BABY TEETH...
...start falling out?
I can't be sure, because since I glimpsed it I can't get her to open her mouth, but I think Rose may have lost one of hers already.
Is this normal?

NO I DON'T WANT...
... ANY BRAZIL NUT TOFFEES, THANK YOU!
I wasn't going to fall for the sob story from the Rington's man today!
He may not have reached his sales target for the brazil nut toffees this month - but I am NOT going to help him out again.
You'd have been proud of me - focused and ruthless - just give me the teabags and the ginger snaps that's all today, thank you!

AND THEY'RE OFF...
... charging around their play area like mad things!
Obviously they just needed a few extra minute shut eye!!

WELL...
.... how very strange.
I've never known the puppies be too tired to have their breakfast.
I was going to take them into Morpeth first thing this morning, but I'll just let them come round in their own time.
It was lovely to see James last night, even though he didn't get here until 9.30. By that time the puppies have usually been in bed for about three quarters of an hour, so, by the time they had greeted him and had a bit of a fuss, it really as a late bedtime for them.
I'm glad he came up, because he had been to Costco after work and got the puppies an enormous pack of chicken fillets! (I know I probably should be giving them dried food, but I enjoy making their meals and make sure that they have a balanced diet, so as I have the time, I don't think it's too much of a problem.)
Anyway, I'm just hanging around again!! I always seem to be waiting for something these days - AND I'M NOT GOOD AT IT!

WHAT'S GOING ON TODAY, GIRLS?
WHY ARE YOU ASLEEP NOW??
You haven't even had your breakfast yet!
Is it because James came round VERY LATE last night and you stayed up to see him??
Are you catching up on the hour's sleep you missed?

AH - THAT'S WHY IT HASN'T COME!
BECAUSE IT'S NOT EXPECTED UNTIL THURSDAY - AT THE EARLIEST!!
And there I've been waiting expectantly all day for my cupcake stand!
Oh well, looks like we won't be having tastefully displayed cupcakes for a few days then.
What a disaster!!

VERY SLEEPY PUPS TODAY
Well, I don't know if it's sleepiness or boredom - but whatever it is they are very lethargic today!
All they seem to have done is sleep and wee this morning!
I'm hanging around waiting for deliveries. Only one has arrived so far. I was hoping that my new spex would come today, but they usually come in the post - and that's been - so I'm disappointed (not that there's any rush though).
Okay, I've finally managed to persuade the puppies that they should play outside as it seems a bit drier. They weren't convinced however and went very reluctantly and now they're just sitting at the window, looking at me pathetically and trying to make me feel really guilty!
WELL IT WON'T WORK YOU TWO!

STUCK IN THE HOUSE TODAY
Yeah that's right - we can't go out today because we're waiting for a number of deliveries of our internet shopping.
Not that we would really want to go out because it is a particularly foul day, but I think the puppies have kind of got used to the morning trip to Morpeth and quite enjoy it. However, they've realised that it's not happening this morning and are snuggled up together, asleep in their bed.
Charles has promised to try and get home reasonably early today. For most of the last week he hasn't got home until almost puppy bedtime! It makes me laugh when he does get home because the pups, who have been my inseparable companions all day, suddenly change their allegiance and get all silly about their 'dad' being back! I don't get a look in as they both compete to be on his knee and then, when they've achieved their goal, they look at me as if to say, 'Well we've humoured you all day, but this is where we really want to be!' (Personally I just think it's because Charles can fit two puppies on his knee at the same time and I CAN'T!)

STAYED UP LATE...
...and watched the recording of the NUFC/Preston match!!
I couldn't bear to watch it live - only managed to stay in the living room for ten minutes, but at least it was the right time to see the only goal. Well done Kevin Nolan! We'd never have thought it last season, but you are really coming good for us at the moment.
What is the point of Harewood though - does anyone know?

IT'S ABOUT TIME...
...we got a new video on tis blog.
I thought that Charles was working on one at the weekend, but it doesn't seem to have materialised. So, he had his headteacher's report to write - nothing much really!!!
I'm sure he'll get it sorted soon though.
The puppies are having quite an active day today, and this is probably a good thing because they're not going to have much outdoor playtime tomorrow if the forecast is right. I've noticed a distinct decrease in their barking, especially during the daytime. BUT, in an evening, some of our neighbours put their dog outside while they are at the pub (that's not as bad as it sounds; they OWN the pub - well actually it's a restaurant with a bar) and it barks constantly. This, I have deduced, is what upsets our girls so much. I feel like going round and having a word - but it won't make any difference according to the woman who lives next door. She knows because she's already tried!
Oh, they're at it again. Excuse me a minute...

THAT'S THE MORNING GONE THEN!
Blink and you miss it!!!
Honestly, how did I EVER have time to go to work? People said this would happen and I didn't believe it - but it's absolutely true!
I had a long chat with my sister last night and, although we did talk about some fun stuff we also spent a long time talking about SCHOOL. I felt rather guilty that I no longer have all those pressures and problems to deal with. And strangely, even when Charles, Helen and Bill yak on about school-life, I honestly don't feel left out or any regret whatsoever.
Helen and Bill are coming to stay for the weekend as they have Monday off. I'm guessing it's a commuted training day. Anyway, whatever the reason, it will be good to see them and to be able to go and do some Christmas shopping together. BILL WILL HATE IT!! He doesn't really do shopping, unless frequent stops at tea shops (and loos!) are included. But he may be lucky, because someone will need to stay at home with the puppies and I'm guessing it may be Bill and Charles.
(I'm just watching a woman on TV who is 110 years old today and has received EXACTLY the same card from HRH for the last ten years! She wrote to complain about it and they've actually managed to send a different one this year!!! Aaaaah - she's quite overcome!)
Right, the puppies have had a good play outside this morning and should be beginning to get ready for a snooze. Despite my worries last night they managed to sleep through the howling wind. Actually, today is really lovely and bright, although, unfortunately, the forecast for tomorrow in Cumbria is really bad again.

AT LAST!
THEY'VE GONE!!!
As soon as it came down to Ollie versus the twins, it was over for them.
I'm quite glad Lloyd didn't end up in the last two, because I don't think the twins would have gone if he had.
It's now coming up to 10pm and the puppies, who haven't had much sleep at all today, initially dozed off at 8.00 despite my best efforts to keep them awake longer. They've been woken by the high wind and rain, but seem to be settling down now, so hopefully they'll get through the night, although listening to the wind howling round the house I'll be surprised. It really is wild
The last few nights have been fine, by the way, and the girls really seem to like snuggling up in the elephant crate,

MIGRAINE
Hmmm - what a waste of an afternoon. No sooner had we finished lunch than I started a migraine. I had just said that I fancied a bit of a Sunday afternoon snooze, when it was forced on me. Fortunately I was able to catch it quickly so within a couple of hours the worst had passed, leaving me feeling a bit wrung out, but okay apart from that.
PHEW!!!
Another manic morning!
It may be Sunday and the Day of Rest but there hasn't been much of that for us!
Up at the usual time, the puppies decided to forego their usual morning sleep. They then geo very over-excited when a colleagues of Charles's came round for coffee bringing his two toddlers with him!
We have now discovered that our house is not at all child friendly and had to scrabble around looking for suitable playthings to keep the little ones occupied. So, if you're coming to see us and you have very young children, make sure you bring some toys from home, otherwise they will be fed up!
Lily and Rose were kept well away from the little girls - and were not impressed with this arrangement at all! Consequently, they've made their feelings known quite vociferously (so much for my anti-barking mission) and, the moment our visitors left the pups collapsed into their beds and began snoring almost instantly!!
Unfortunately, James is due to arrive any minute and, unless he sneaks covertly into the house, they are going to be woken up again, long before they will be ready!!

WHO WILL BE SENT HOME THIS WEEK?
It's sad but true that the highlight of our weekend is X factor!!
Or, perhaps I should say, ONE of the highlights as James is coming round tomorrow. Clearly THAT will be a highlight, as long as he's got over us both being 'rubbish'!
Anyway, back to the topic in the title - who will it be? I would still love it to be the twins, but I suspect they're in for the long haul. It probably should be Lloyd, who I thought should have gone last week.
Did anyone watch the concert for Children in Need on Thursday? I really enjoyed it, especially the Take That bits obviously! For anyone who doesn't know, my sister and I were lucky enough to go to their CIRCUS gig at Sunderland in the summer - and STILL haven't got over how absolutely fantastic the show was. I got the tickets for my birthday, from James - BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!!
HOW DID I GET FROM X FACTOR TO TAKE THAT?
Well, I was thinking about Cheryl Cole actually, so she was the connection!

I HATE IT WHEN...
...all the other clubs are playing today and we have to wait until Monday night!
Aaargh!!!
Aaargh!!!
NEARLY DARK ALREADY
And it's not even 3.00 yet. Mind you, in fairness, it has hardly been light all day. It's one of those miserable wet, grey days when all you want to do is stay at home with a mug of hot chocolate!
Unfortunately, that is NOT what we have been doing. We had an early start and got into Newcastle for 9am, did what we needed to do and were out by 10!!! Then we had a quick(ish) trip to B and Q, followed by a rapid run around Tesco and were home by 11.30. We passed James on the way back; he'd been taking Kate to work in town. He rang while we were still making our way to Fram, to tell us that we are both 'rubbish'! Apparently, he had had a conversation with his Dad last night along the lines of, 'I'm going to town, you're going to town, let's meet up IN TOWN.' Only no one thought to tell ME and I didn't have my phone on and Charles managed to miss all James's calls somehow. James, I promise you, that if I had known about the plan I would have made sure we met up with you. Please don't think I'M rubbish - that's just your dad!!!
Anyway, despite being rubbish, I've managed to get quite a lot done today. The kitchen smells lovely just now, with a chicken stock simmering away and a white chocolate and raspberry torte in the oven.
The puppies have had a good day so far, even though they haven't been able to get outside much. Following Lily's unsettled behaviour yesterday evening, she slept right through the night (as did Rose) and they woke up in a lovely mood, so whatever was bothering her has been forgotten for now.

YIPPEE!!!
THE CURTAINS ARE BACK UP!! (for now anyway) I'm quite leased really because it saves us having to buy new ones - but I'm not 100% convinced that they'll stay in place. This is absolutely NOT a reflection on Charles's workmanship - but they ARE extremely heavy and
However, the puppies, or Lily in particular, are all over the place tonight. Something outside is really spooking her. I think it's a dog a few doors down, that is barking incessantly, but whatever it is, she is getting extremely stressed. Rose is doing her best to settle, in fact judging by the little snoring noises, I'm guessing she's dropped off now. But Lily, is lying by the French doors with her ears pricked and one eye open. Clearly she wants to be asleep, but just can't relax.
Anyway, I really hope she doesn't take to much longer, because I am REALLY ready for a break now!

THE WEEKEND AGAIN!
TEMPUS FUGIT - as they say! (Well they probably don't actually, but it sounds good!)
Charles is going to TRY to get home reasonably early today, having had three days when he hasn't been home until after 8pm.
He must be really looking forward to the bit of DIY (reattaching the curtain pole) that he needs to do this evening!!! Depending on the success or otherwise of his actions, we will either be putting the very heavy curtains back, or going curtain shopping tomorrow!
James is coming up this evening and I think he's having tea with us. It'll be nice to see him (and his washing of course!). He'll no doubt get dragged into Operation Curtain Pole!
I need to pop into Eldon Square tomorrow to get some cake decorating stuff. I'm sure Charles will be THRILLED about that!
Other than that, I have no real plans. It would be good to do some SERIOUS training with the puppies, concentrating on walking to heel. I've given Charles the training manual to read and inwardly digest, so Lily WILL NOT be running round on a long lead for the foreseeable future!

MY HEART GOES OUT...
...to all those people in Workington and Cockermouth who have been affected by the appalling floods. The news footage shows the devastating effects of all that rainfall and I can only try to imagine how people are feeling right now.
My family lived in Workington for a while, so I know the area. It's never had a lot going for it, being situated on the wrong side of the Lake District and certainly used to give me the impression of being a bit tired and behind the times. I can only hope that the area is given the fullest possible support to help it recover.
The saddest thing about it all is that a policeman was swept away when one of the bridges on the outskirts of Workington collapsed.
Based on the experience of the residents of Morpeth and Rothbury following last year's flood it's going to be a long time before normal life resumes.

HERE I AM!!!
Sorry about that, but I've been playing with my new little toy - a little tin full of coffee stencils - a bit like the ones you get in Costa that make a nice little pattern on top of the frothy milk on your cappuccino. The set that i've got has stencils for every occasion, so I've obviously had to make endless cappuccinos to try all of them out. I am now as high as a kite and probably won't need to sleep for three days!
It's also a great bit of kit for decorating the tops of mince pies with icing sugar. I know this because I've just tried it! I bought the most amazing mince pies from Heighley Gate's own bakery yesterday and there is a serious danger that I might have eaten the whole box by the time Charles gets home. Handy Christmas Tip: If you really want to cheat, but don't want anyone to know - go and stock up on these mince pies. THEY ARE SERIOUSLY FANTASTIC. The beauty of them is that they LOOK homemade and are not too sweet. If you decant them into a bun tray and pop them in the oven, your guests will think you've made them all by yourself, and believe me, they will want more than one!

LILY AND ROSE...
... have been absolutely gorgeous today!!!
We've really worked hard on two things: 1) Not biting but being gentle and 2) Not barking at anything that moves or makes a noise.
Of course, it's a lot to remember, but most of the time they've done really well. (They are having a little bark now, but it's part of a game and nothing like the frantic yapping of the last few days.) I suppose I have to know where to draw the line. Do I have to tackle ALL barking, or is it acceptable at times. For example, I would WANT them to bark if something untoward was happening. Is it acceptable to bark when they are playing? I THINK it is as long as it doesn't go on too long. The way it's working at the moment is that Lily runs off with the chewy bone and then barks at Rose who is supposed to go and chase it. I think it's their version of, 'Coming, ready or not'.
It's funny, but you can really tell when they are TRYING to be good. Some days it's a real slog, but today they have both been really receptive.
10/10 for effort today girls!!!

NOT MUCH HAPPENING TODAY
The puppies are having one of their sleepy days. They have only just woken up - and that was after I deliberately started creating a bit of a disturbance in the kitchen.
One thing I DO want to know though, is WHY are we still getting wasps around at this time of the year? (If my sister reads this she will think it's the wasp equivalent of my Mum's bee story!! You don't want to know - honest!) Every day I have to get rid of a persistent wasp that is intent on making it's way into the puppies' room! Now, before you suggest that it is ONE wasp (Gosh - this IS like the bee story!) I know for a fact that it isn't because I KILL THEM when they get in the house. I take the utmost pleasure in spraying them with that foul smelling wasp killing spray and then flushing them down the loo, after having stamped on them first to make sure they really ARE dead. So, where are they coming from? It's the middle of November for goodness sake!

THANK YOU DANNYMATT
I really appreciate your helpful hints and tips regarding the barking issue.
I'm not altogether convinced by the water gun type thing, but if you say it works, I'll give it a go, but will limit it to outdoor barking only!
I've been using the distraction technique this morning. This was put to the test when there was an almighty clattering noise from somewhere round the corner which upset the pups enormously, but I managed to reduce what would usually be frantic barking to rather pathetic whimpering, which was a definite improvement. As with anything though, only time and consistency will tell.
Actually the puppies are having another of their very sleepy mornings. We've been out for a little while so they slept in the car, but we hadn't been home half an hour before they decided they needed to catch a few more zzzzs.
So, I'm going to take advantage of the fact that they are both splarred out, legs akimbo, and going through to the sitting room to, well, SIT!

INDIAN TAKEAWAY
That's what we're having tonight, when Charles EVENTUALLY gets home!
I might well have faded away from lack of sustenance by then though!
I might well have faded away from lack of sustenance by then though!
NOT MUCH TIME TODAY...
... for writing on the blog.
In fact I've noticed that, as the puppies are growing up and I am able to take them out more, I'm not spending nearly as much time on the blog as I did at first. I'm not saying it's losing it's appeal, because that is NOT the case, but I'm certainly using time differently now. In the early days when we first got Lily and Rose, I often didn't go out of the house from one week to the next, but now we usually go somewhere everyday. The girls seem to love being in the car and settle to sleep very quickly. It reminds me of when Christina and James were babies. If they wouldn't go to sleep, we used to put them in the car and drive around with them until they nodded off. We certainly clocked up a few miles in those days!!!
NEW BEDS
Right! This time there'll be NO CHEWING girls!
Plastic baskets were not the beds of choice (they don't look nearly as good as some of the very nice fabric ones!) BUT we have got to the point where there is no alternative. Plastic SHOULD be less easy to chew, so that is what they now have. (They're a tasteful silver colour though!)
And I have to say that the girls appear to like them. They've just had lunch and are now preparing for their afternoon snooze, curled up together in one of the new beds. It's funny how we get two of everything, but they always end up sharing one! (We, or rather I, need to learn from this!)

BRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
I've just walked to the postbox (a mere twenty yards away) and come back with tears in my eyes due to the bitterly cold wind. Not a pleasant morning at all.
The puppies had a good night last night, with no disturbance. They are currently outside barking at all the kids who are making their way to the school bus! Why DO they need to bark at every little thing that passes our house? If it moves, they bark - especially Rose, she's certainly the worst (or best!) barker. I'm not convinced that the practice of ignoring barking, as recommended in 'The Perfect Puppy', is working.
So, Dannymatt, as you and I appear to be the only ones on this blog at the moment - what can you tell me to help sort THIS one out?

I'M BEGINNING TO DREAD...
WALKIES!
It is, in my opinion, almost impossible to train two puppies at the same time - unless you are a professional animal trainer maybe.
The whole process seems to be a battle from the minute I reach for their leads. Getting these clipped onto their collars is a work of art, because the pups are so excited they jump around and even run off with the leads. We invariably get into a tangle before we've even left the house and once we get through the gate it's every dog for herself - with me somewhere between the two, who are usually intent on going in opposite directions.
I am trying VERY HARD to get them to walk close to me, but this isn't easy. It is compounded by the fact that when there are two of us walking them, Charles tends to take Lily and let her have a long lead which isn't conducive to walking to heel. He walks ahead, with Lily running around and I follow with Rose trying to catch Lily. Obviously this is NOT the most effective way of training them.
I usually walk Rose on the left and Lily on the right - or that is what I TRY to do. The reality of it is somewhat different and both pups tend to run across me, so that I'm constantly afraid of stepping on them.
On our return to the house, Rose has taken to sitting down at the end of the drive and refusing to budge, as if she isn't wanting the walk to end and the only way I managed to get her in today, short of picking her up, was by bribing her with treats.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG???

WHEN I SAID...
...that it was good that the fire was arriving early, so we could 'go and do stuff' I hadn't really thought about what that might be!!
In fact, I can't think of much that I either need or want to do today to be honest.
I'm kind of hanging around for a delivery of cake decorating goodies that were ordered on Sunday evening. Also, it's possible that new spex for Charles and I may arrive today, so I want to be around should either of these happen.
The puppies have had a good sleep this morning, once again shut into their elephant crate. It might sound cruel but a) they're only in there when they're asleep and b) they seem to enjoy the security. They certainly don't mind being in there at all and have now started to recognise it as their bed, as when I tell them it's bedtime, that is the place they head for. I know I laughed when Charles got this particular crate because, at the time the puppies were so tiny and it looked massive, but they actually pretty nearly fill it now when they're in there together and it will only be a matter of time before we need another one!
The fire DID arrive this morning - and it seems fine. I'll wait till Charles gets back before tastefully arranging the stones, because I'm not sure if he will want to fix it to the wall or leave it freestanding. (Knowing Charles he'll just want to leave it!)

SPOOKED PUPS
The girls really don't like change!
When Charles came in last night (admittedly at 8pm, so he WAS tired) the first thing he had to do was to remove the curtains and the pole from the puppies room. The pole had come very loose and was just about hanging off the wall, so it needed to be removed before they settled for the night because it would probably have collapsed in the night, resulting in traumatised puppies.
Once he'd got the right specs on, it was relatively straightforward, although there is a screw missing and we've got to hope that it isn't inside one of the girls.
However, when you take curtains down it not only alters the light in the room but the acoustics as well - and the girls were not happy with this at all. It took ages to get them settled and, in the end, the only way we did it was by putting both of them into the elephant crate and locking them in for the night. I think the fact that they were in a really secure area AND in close proximity to each other, helped them to settle better and they managed to get through the night without the disturbance of the previous two nights.
I'm not sure what to do about the curtains. They are only a few weeks old, but VERY heavy, so we might need to be looking for some lighter ones, once Charles has replaced the pole.
This morning I'm expecting the fireplace to be delivered, and have just had a call to say it will be here by 10.00. This is good, because it leaves the rest of the day to go out and do stuff.

THE PUPPIES ARE...
...doing their level best to get into the dishwasher!
Why?
Because this afternoon I cooked a tiny bit of liver as a treat for them and they can smell the dish in side the dishwasher. It's driving them absolutely crazy!!!

NEWCASTLE NEWS
I've got Sky Sports News on and there was an announcement that there would be the 'latest news from Newcastle' so I turned up the volume and waited expectantly, only to find it was Barry Moat, saying that it was time the fans got behind the players and laid off Fat Mike.
Listen, Mr Moat - the fans ARE behind the players and why should we lay off the man who IS SINGLE HANDEDLY DESTROYING OUR CLUB???
And anyway, why are YOU giving your opinion to SSN - your takeover bid didn't come to much, did it?

JAMIE AFRO
I really didn't want Jamie to go out last night. I really liked him. In my opinion it should have been Lloyd given the fact that the twins got through AGAIN! Not that I have ever actually voted or anything!
Well, it's nearly lunchtime. The pups and I have been to Morpeth this morning and are now confined to the house because the weather is SHOCKING! In fact, I'm glad we went when we did! Talk about raining cats and dogs, even the pups don't like it! So they're not very happy at the moment and quite squabbly with each other and the room smells of very wet dogs! Lovely!!

MONDAY AGAIN
And again we had barking in the night, at just about the same time as the previous night. I can only assume that it is a cat doing it's rounds and the girls are being disturbed by it. They settled quickly enough, although I again ended up reading till about 3am and having a cup of tea in bed!
I'm going to persevere a bit longer without the big crate. If this continues though, IT WILL BE BACK!
I DID think I could solve the problem by simply drawing the curtains in the puppies room. We haven't done this before, but after the first disturbed night it seemed like a good idea. However, when I came to do just that I noticed with horror that the very heavy curtains (obviously we've put the 'winter' curtains up now!) appear to be too much for the curtain pole and are pulling it away from the wall. I DID point this out to Charles, who really didn't want to know and paled visibly when he came through to investigate. In all honesty, DIY and Charles do not get on! (I always find this a bit odd as his Mum had a hardware business when he was younger and I would have expected him to grow up with at least the basics in terms of household repairs - but no, he avoids such matters at all costs, unless he really has no alternative and then he approaches the task in a manner which usually means I stay well out of the way!)
Anyway, looking at the state of the curtain pole and the jaunty angle at which it is now hanging, I'll be surprised if it lasts the day!

PHEW!
What a very busy day!
Had a lovely time shopping with James - he never complains, however long it takes and he's great at carrying all the bags!
We managed to get lots of Christmas stuff done, as well as fitting in coffee and cakes PLUS pizza for lunch. I've told him that I can't make a habit of going shopping with him, because I'll end up like a house-end!

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING
James and I are going to the Metro Centre later this morning to do some serious Christmas shopping.
I'm really looking forward to this, so long as everyone else in the North east hasn't had the same idea. One thing I cannot bear is having to push and shove my way through crowds of dawdling shoppers.
I tend to be ruthless when it comes to shopping. I know in advance what I'm looking for, where I'm going to get it and like to get it over and done with as quickly as possible. I've never been someone who enjoys just looking round or 'window shopping'. Where is the pleasure in window shopping anyway - I've never understood that concept!
This approach has served me well for years. It applies to all types of shopping, even clothes. Charles finds it difficult to understand, but I know straightaway what is going to look right and very rarely bother trying things on. This drives him mad!!!! When I go shopping with him, the whole thing takes at least twice as long because he insists on me looking around before making my mind up and has been known on many occasions, once he has persuaded me to try stuff on, to send armfuls of alternatives into the changing room ,with the result that I'm in there so long, that some shop assistants have offered me coffee and cakes while I'm in there!!!! ('We don't want you passing out from hunger!')
Don't get me wrong. I think it's lovely that he takes such an interest and is such a patient shopper - it's just that I'm NOT PATIENT AT ALL!

POTENTIAL BURGLARS BEWARE!
Was it an intruder?
Or just a cat?
SOMETHING woke the puppies at 2am!
For the first time since they came home, we were woken up during the night. This had nothing to do with the absence of their crate, however, as it was clear that something had disturbed them and they were both barking ferociously at some unseen enemy.
Although we could have done without the disturbance, it was good to know that, should we ever have burglars - THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GET A FOOT INSIDE THE DOOR THANKS TO OUR VIGILANT PUPS!!
We both went rushing through to see what the fuss was about, popped the pups out for a wee and then settled them back to sleep. All in all an interruption to our slumbers of about 15 minutes. Not too bad really.
The only problem for me was that, having been startled into wakefulness, I couldn't get back to sleep for ages, so ended up reading for about an hour.
At one time (ie when I was a working person) this would have bothered me, as a good night's sleep was precious, but now it doesn't have the same hold over me at all. So what if I don't get the full eight hours, I can always have forty winks during the day if I want to!

IT'S HERE!!
AND IT FITS!
Mind you it had to go round the back of the house and through the patio doors in the sunroom.
I felt really sorry for the two deliverymen, who were clearly from Latvia or somewhere like that. They'd driven up from London in the awful weather (it's not been awful here mind you, it's only been really bad 'dahn sarf') were delayed by five hours and still had a delivery to make in Scotland tonight!
Anyway, the sofa is really lovely, but I know for a fact, that if I sit with my back against the back of it, my feet are going to be dangling way above the floor - in fact I probably won't be able to sit on it without getting pins and needles!
It's a plain fabric that blends in well with the rest of the furnishings - so I'm well pleased - and very relieved.
However, I am going to have to rethink the positioning of the fireplace, which is a shame because it WAS going to look great in the place I had originally planned, but now that we have the biggest sofa in the world, I'm going to have to put it further up the living room.
No problem - we'll sort it and hopefully Charles can start breathing normally again!

OH MY GOODNESS
(I was going to say, 'Oh God', but my mum reads this and she wouldn't like it.
The sofa people are here...
...BUT IT MIGHT NOT GO THROUGH THE DOOR!!

6.45pm - AND WE'RE STILL WAITING!
In fairness, we've been kept informed all day about the ETA and now it's only twenty minutes away!!
The puppies, typically, have just fallen asleep, and are going to get a rude awakening in a little while.
Charles has spent most of the afternoon with them snuggled up on his knee. This is quite an achievement as they are pretty big now and ONE of them fits on my knees, but somehow he managed it and the three of them have had a lovely afternoon.
I still have a bit of a feeling of dread about this sofa. I WAS really looking forward to it, but now I'm not so sure!
We're just passing the time watching the England/Brazil friendly. Unfortunately we don't look like scoring in the next three minutes, which is all the time left. The band that accompany the England team are playing their hearts out though! MOTM should go to the guy with the trumpet!!!

GETTING VERY NERVOUS NOW
Still waiting for the sofa delivery and Charles has gone for a lie down in a darkened room!
I honestly don't know how we got so mixed up with the size. Charles blames ME of course and says I was the one who wanted the three seater, but I HONESTLY cannot remember that.
There wouldn't be a problem had I not insisted on having the fireplace, but we are going to be running short of wall space now. Of course you need to understand that there will be a total of four sofas in that room by the time we've finished - one for Charles, one for me and one for each of the puppies! (Only joking - they're not allowed on the furniture!!!)

AAAARGH! PANIC!!!
We've ordered the BIG sofa!
I thought it was the medium one and have based all my measurements on that!
THE BIG SOFA IS HUGE!
WHERE WILL IT GO?
Charles is walking around looking like his blood pressure is at boiling point and he will spontaneously combust at any moment. IT ISN'T NICE!
And I'm trying to stay calm and trying to pretend it won't be a problem.
(And I'm definitely keeping out of his way!)

NICE MORNING
It has actually been a very nice morning and not just in terms of the weather either. Charles and I took the puppies into Morpeth first thing. I'm glad we got there before 9.00, because an hour later you could barely get moved. Normally I wouldn't have the patience in crowds like that, but it is the first weekend for people to enjoy the new shops, so it's perfectly understandable that everyone wants to have a look around. Like I said yesterday, I am REALLY impressed and it is difficult to believe that we are actually in Morpeth after so many years of little change. These new stores are really going to give the existing ones a hard time - and that can only be a good thing for the customer, as they will really have to up their game if they are to compete. Rutherfords (a shop which I LOVE) was virtually empty this morning, in fact I thought at first that it wasn't open, but they will be hit hard by Laura Ashley and M and S.
While we were looking round we bumped into people we hadn't seen for years - it was almost like some sort of reunion - and looking around it was happening to everyone else as well. There was a real feel good factor!
Charles left Morpeth with the puppies and I stayed on a bit longer to meet James for coffee and a wander round, then he drove me back to Fram.
There was a message on the answer phone from the guys who are delivering the sofa to say they will be about an hour late because of the road conditions further south. Not a problem - we're not going to be going anywhere else today.

WITH SOME TREPIDATION...
... we approached the puppies room this morning, not sure what we would find after the first night that they had been unrestrained in their crate. Would there be a sea of wee to navigate? A pile of poop? Would they have chewed everything within reach?
NO! Nothing was amiss! We just found two little puppies, who had slept right through the night and were pleased to see us. So everything normal, then!!!

THE PUPPIES ARE STRUGGLING...
...TO STAY AWAKE!
And it's only 8 o'clock!
This is very different from last night when they were absolutely hyper.
We've just been outside for a pee-pee (the puppies, not me!) and it looks as though the foul weather that has been forecast for the weekend has arrived already. It makes me laugh how it makes the national news when storms are going to affect the south, but barely gets a mention if it's up here! (There will be gale force winds and a months worth of rain in the next twenty four hours in the north - but hey, in the south we're going to be just fine, thank you very much!)
We worked out tonight that we have had the pups for ten weeks this weekend. That means they're 18 weeks old tomorrow. They are officially 'juveniles' (and were certainly juveniles of the delinquent variety yesterday!) I don't think ths means anything in particular - the dreaded puberty phase is the one to look out for and that can begin any time after 5 months in smaller dogs, so, by my reckoning we'll be well into the throes of teenage tantrums by Christmas. I can barely wait!

HOORAY
I've got the laptop back!
I've felt as though I had my right arm cut off (or left arm in my case) having to manage without it all day.
I really miss writing the blog. At one time I would have said I would miss reading the Newcastle United blogs - but they're pretty rubbish at the moment, so I don't frequent them as much as I used to. A quick check on News Now occasionally and that's me done these days. Newcastle news is either doom and gloom, or embarrassingly, well embarrassing, so it's not worth bothering with.
Time to catch up then. The pups and I have had a lovely day today - it certainly made up for their horrendousness last night. They were incredibly patient this morning while I went to Morpeth and I didn't hear a peep from the back of the car until we got back home.
Once they'd had a bit of a play I decided to start moving furniture round ready for the new sofa which is due to arrive tomorrow. This started as a relatively straightforward swop around and ended up as a major upheaval involving most of the rooms in the house. But I got there in the end. The sitting room now has space for the sofa AND the fireplace and, thankfully, no longer has to be arranged to hide the nasty marks on the carpet!!!
The puppy's room is also quite different. Their big crate has gone and there is an easy chair in here, for those times when the floor just won't do! The girls watched all the changes, and have slept in their 'new' room this afternoon. We're just hoping that the sleep as well as they normally do during the night!

A NEW DAY!!!
And all the feelings of inadequacy from last night have gone!
The puppies and I have been into Morpeth, where I left them in their crate for a few minutes and had a quick run round the new shops - VERY impressive and just what Morpeth needed!
Then I had a bit of a wasted exercise as I tried to find unchewable puppy beds - the very fact that I am out looking for these should give yu an inkling about the fate of the ones that Charles got the other day. Anyway, the upshot is... there are NONE to be had in Morpeth, but I'm having some sent down from Farmway in Alnwick. (I could just have gone there myself!!)
A major achievement - I managed to fill my car with DIESEL not unleaded - hurray.
Got to rush - Christina needs to borrow this laptop.
BE BACK LATER!!

ALL IS WELL
There you go - Charles is home and the puppies are having their beauty treatment and settling down beautifully.
He must wonder what on earth I'm whinging about when I say they've been AWFUL this evening, because now they're behaving like little cherubs!
In fact, I honestly feel like having a good cry now!
(Good grief it IS post-natal depression!)

FEELING GUILTY NOW
I didn't really mean it!
I would never give the girls away!
I love them to bits, but I think I've suffered something resembling post-natal depression today and they've just managed to wind me up the wrong way.
I feel especially guilty because I shouted at them. Mind you, it did the trick. For about an hour they were really quiet and just wanted to sit close to me. But the effect has worn off now and they are happily gambolling around outside again, playing their favourite game of 'Doorstep Tag'.
Charles has rung to say he's on his way home. Good! At least he can have a few minutes with them.

ANYONE WANT TWO PUPPIES?
Five o'clock is the time when I'm at my lowest ebb and the puppies are MANIC. I could seriously consider giving them away right now (Only kidding, but ten minutes peace would be nice!)
Usually at this time I can look forward to Charles getting home, so that I can relinquish responsibility for the girls for a little while, but today he won't be back until after 9pm and will probably miss out on the pups completely. They'll just have to put up with ME doing their grooming tonight, although I'm nowhere near as good at it as Charles is.
They've had a go at chewing the mop and are now fighting (as in standing on their hind legs and practically strangling each other) over Stumpy the Cow ( He's called Stumpy because he hasn't got real legs just two little stumps. Which is still two stumps less than he should have, but never mind - the puppies clearly love him regardless of his disability!) It's that time of day when they cannot play with their own toys, but both have to play with the same one and don't like doing this at all.

WET SHEEP
I think that's what the living room smells of right now. Hopefully it will dissipate rapidly as I don't relish the thought of spending an evening with THAT particular aroma. Not that I ever get through to the living room until after the puppies have settled for the night, which usually means I have about an hour of nodding off in front of the TV before admitting defeat and turning in for the night.
We've just had another fairly chaotic walk. I have to admit that this is one area where we are not making brilliant progress in terms of their training. I'm usually glad to get them home without having fallen over them or lost them because they've slipped their collars.
They have, fairly predictably changed from the sleepy, docile pups of yesterday and this morning, to the puppies from hell again and are currently intent on chewing as much of the garden fence as they can, despite the fact that I've liberally sprayed it with that 'Puppy Stop' stuff. (I think that's kind of like the stuff my mum used to get me to stop me biting my nails - which I don't think worked particularly well as I actually quite liked the taste - and that is presumably the problem with the Puppy Stop - my girls actually seem to like it!

BRILLIANT!
We have spotless carpets again!!!
Well, it didn't take long to get the job done, but the carpet looks fab now!
I've thrown all the windows open to try and dry it out a bit more quickly - not that it's too wet, but definitely damp!
The puppies coped very well with two strangers and a very noisy cleaning machine in the house. I suppose the worst thing was seeing the colour of the water when they'd finished - scary! - and I pride myself on having a clean house! So, from now on, there will be no shoes in the sitting room!

JUST WAITING!
I'm just hanging about waiting for the carpet cleaners, who were supposed to come this afternoon, but rang three quarters of an hour ago to say could they come in 20 minutes. That's 20 minutes from when they rang, not 20 minutes from now. So they might be earlier, but they're late if you see what I mean! Hmmm!
THE OIL MAN
How strange!
Last night, just before I went to sleep, I thought, 'I bet we're getting a bit low on heating oil, especially now I'm home all day and have the boiler on most of the time.' And, wouldn't you know it, we get an oil delivery this morning!
This was not, as you may suppose, a case of us ORDERING oil because we don't need to do that any more. We have a sensor that tells the oil company when we are running low, so they deliver BEFORE we run out, which is what used to happen before. Believe me, there is nothing worse than sitting in a freezing house in the middle of winter waiting for a delivery of oil - and we have done that a few times. Funnily, in those days, I would say to Charles, 'I think we may need oil soon, and he would reply, 'No we've got LOADS left' and then we would run out the next day! The secret is... listening to the noises your boiler makes! Yes I know, sounds crazy doesn't it, but seriously, the boiler really does sound different when it's running on fumes.
Unfortunately, the oil delivery has woken the puppies who WERE enjoying a lovely snooze!

THE PUPPIES SEEM...
... a little subdued this morning. In fact I'm just a TINY bit worried about them. They had a very sleepy day yesterday and haven't eaten their breakfast this morning which is NOT like them. Having said that they are rolling around the floor together at the moment, clearly intent on destroying the cuddly toys that their Uncle Richard gave them when they were tiny. They're behaving like proper little terriers, shaking poor old Sean the Sheep senseless. Unfortunately, Sean has a little bell inside his body and the constant ringing is driving me nuts!!
Now I think about it, maybe I don't need to be worried at all. I suppose we all have days when we are a bit out of sorts without it necessarily being a medical emergency!

SANDERSON ARCADE
Tomorrow is the opening of the new shopping arcade in Morpeth - and I will NOT be there! I'm sure it'll be very exciting and it would be nice to see Joanna Lumley, but I'm guessing that everyone within a thirty mile radius will be crammed into the town centre and I can do without that. James says that the main street is to be closed off to traffic, so there will undoubtedly be chaos on the surrounding roads and I don't enjoy sitting in queues whilst trying to spot the one remaining parking space in the whole of the town - so, it's not for me!
James, on the other hand, has a day off work which he's going to spend with the lovely Kate and they can simply stroll down the street to see what's going on!

CARPET CLEANERS
Has anyone ever had the carpet cleaners in? I only ask because I've got them coming tomorrow to clean the living room carpet. I wanted it doing before the new sofa arrives on Saturday. As it's a cream carpet it shows EVERY mark and I've become very good at using strategically positioned rugs to disguise these. However, there is a limit to how many rugs you can have in a room and so we're going to see if the cleaners can magic the marks away. You're probably thinking, 'Why on earth is she doing this when she's got two young puppies?' It's a fair question! Logic would say it's probably a waste of time and money - but there's nothing logical about my OCD!!
SHOPPING...
...must be exhausting for puppies, because my two have hardly managed to stay awake (apart from the incident with the Ringtons man!) since we got back this morning. They appear to love their new beds, now that they have stopped trying to eat them whole, and have spent most of the afternoon curled up in them.
I tell a slight lie; they WERE awake for about an hour, during which I needed to go down to David's shop. I popped them into their crate with a load of toys and reminded them to be good girls. When I got back ten minutes later, they had completely shredded the newspaper that I leave in there in case of accidents and it looked as though they had systematically dipped each piece in their water bowl with the result that their papier mache technique is pretty much perfect now! They must have watched me go and then instantly started the mischief and yet, when I came back, they looked at me as though they'd never even moved in my absence!
We haven't been out for a walk yet, so I hope they wake up soon, otherwise the daylight will be gone. If they DON'T have a walk I can guarantee that it will be hell later on as they will have so much energy to use up it will almost certainly be put to use by beating each other up!
I've spent the last half hour crashing around to try to disturb them - but to no avail. Lily's doing that thing again, where she moves around the room by magic in her sleep. She was in the bed, then in front of my feet, then back in the bed - and I NEVER see her move!!!

BACK FROM KINGSTON PARK
And MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
The puppies slept all the way there and back and didn't make a fuss when I went shopping, so all in all a good trip. I bought a rug from Next to go in front of the hearth, which Charles will say we don't need, but I know we DO! Then I ran into Boots and got a few Christmas bits.
When we got home I had to juggle the shopping and the puppies a bit, but eventually we all made it inside - no easy task believe me!
I'd just decided to put the hoover round, when the puppies who were outside by now, started to create an almighty fuss and, on investigation, it turned out to be the Ringtons man (I'd forgotten it was Wednesday) being held captive by two crazy licking creatures. Honestly, he couldn't move and seemed very relieved when I called them off! However, things got a little mad at this point because I had forgotten that I'd left the front door open and that the kitchen door was also open because the hoover was propped there. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, but Lily, the escape artist, was on the case and managed to break through the safety gate, with Rose close behind her and they appeared outside again, just when the poor man thought he was safe and had started giving me the spiel about the lightly spiced Christmas coffee! At this point he rather rashly popped the puppies through the front door and closed it with a sigh of relief. 'Oh no,' I thought, 'Now they can get ANYWHERE in the house and it's always been out of bounds to them, so they will probably have a wee in every corner before I get to them!' Anyway, the Rington's man was in no hurry and continued to try to sell me his Christmas goodies, finishing with the 'I have to be honest, I'm really struggling to sell the toffees' line. "Oh for goodness sake, I'LL buy the toffees, just hurry up and go so I can lassoo the puppies and clean the carpets'. (I didn't actually SAY this, because I was brought up to be polite, but I DID think it - A LOT!)
Anyway - he didn't actually HAVE the wretched toffees in his basket, so he needs to come back with them later. 'Just bring them next time,' said I helpfully. 'Oh I'll come back today, it's no problem!' he replied. Well it may not be a problem to you matey...

KINGSTON PARK
We're going to go a bit further afield this morning, as far as Kingston Park actually!
I want to go to NEXT and TESCO today, so the puppies had better be good in the car, because they're coming with me.
After their little escapade earlier, they've thankfully settled down a bit, but I tell you what, Charles won't be making THAT mistake again!
I've been reading about puppy development and what can be expected at different milestones. Unfortunately, getting them to return on command doesn't happen for a good few months yet, which is why we won't be letting them off their leads any time soon. I don't think Charles has read the same book - but I'll be making sure he does now!

NO CHARLES! DON'T DO IT!!!
Me: 'Don't open the gate Charles, the puppies are right behind you!'
'Oh, they'll be fine, they won't go through the gate,' said Charles nonchalantly, opening the gate as he spoke.
Me: 'Look out they're through. I TOLD YOU! WHY DON'T YOU LISTEN TO ME!'
'HERE LILY! HERE ROSE!' yelled Charles, as two little white sprinters disappeared around the front of the house. 'GO AND GET THEIR TREATS QUICKLY,' he yelled at me with panic in his voice.
Me, muttering: 'For God's sake Charles! Just listen to me next time! And you'd better be able to RUN FAST!'
'It's okay, I've got them,' panted Charles, rather red faced by now.
Me: 'Hmmm. You won't do THAT again, will you?'
'Er, no!'

NEW BEDS
Well, Charles came home with new puppy beds to replace the chewed ones and very nice they are too. Nice and cosy and with the added advantage of matching the colour scheme in the puppies room exactly!
However, the girls weren't too sure and kept trying one out and then the other and in the end decided that the floor was just as good!
Oh well - some you win...
It's just gone 9.15 and after a fairly fractious hour during which they have squabbled with each other constantly, the girls are now asleep. I love it when they've got really drowsy and I just say, 'Bedtime Lily, Bedtime Rose,' and they stagger into their crate and snuggle up together.

TO ALL CONTACT LENS WEARERS
Have you ever got them mixed up, so that you put the left lens in your right eye and the right one in... you get the picture?
I DID TODAY!
So when the puppies and I went to Morpeth and I couldn't see a thing, that was why!!

IS IT JUST ME...
... or has the temperature dropped dramatically during the past couple of hours?
It's bitterly cold outside now, so I hope any wees and poops from the puppies are done quickly!!
They've just woken up after a long sleep and are enjoying their Kongs which are stuffed with cream cheese, a little shredded chicken, a broken puppy biscuit and a tiny bit of mature cheddar cheese. It's really funny - but they go MAD for these Kongs. When I'm preparing their normal meals they sit and wait brilliantly, never taking their eyes off what I'm doing, presumably making sure they both get equal rations. But when I do their Kong for them they can hardly control themselves and Lily does this vertical lift off thing, like a spring lamb, in her excitement. They still don't get them until they can sit and wait, but they do find it difficult!!

TODAY'S WALK...
...wasn't the best, was it girls?
It was one of those occasions when I would have coped with ONE pup - but TWO was just one two many! Whereas yesterday they had walked really well, today they were all over the place and took absolutely no notice of any verbal commands. They had to sit down every time any traffic passed and insisted on smelling just about every blade of grass. This was interspersed with bouts of galloping as something else caught their attention.
So, not brilliant at all today!
It is time for the afternoon snooze now though and they have put themselves to bed - lets hope they have a good long sleep - I DESERVE IT!

BAD GIRLS!!
Honestly, you take your eyes off them for two minutes - and they've chewed their lovely little beds to shreds! Admittedly, only a small patch, but now that they've started, they will undoubtedly continue whenever they get the opportunity. As is always the case, when they're quiet and NOT asleep, they are up to no good. When I caught them in the act, they were working as a demolition unit, one attacking from INSIDE the bed and the other on the outside. Eventually of course, the two met, resulting in a bed with a gaping hole in it.
Fortunately, Charles has seen some dog beds - in a garage(!) - so he's going to pick some up on his way home this evening.
James rang last night to say that his course is going well and he'd passed his exams yesterday. He said the morning had been fine and well broken u with breaks, but the afternoon was heavy going and they had no break from 1.00 to 4.30. Why do course leaders DO that? After lunch is ALWAYS the time when you struggle to stay awake. I can remember courses I've been on, when I know for a fact, that I've had forty winks after lunch! I used to hope that I didn't start talking in my sleep, or dribbling or wake with a start so that everyone noticed!!! In fact I used to ask whoever I was sitting next to to wake me up if they noticed me nodding off!!! James admitted it was a struggle yesterday, especially as the speaker was somewhat less than inspiring.
Anyway, he and his colleague from work were going out for an Indian and hoping to find a pub that was showing the Brum/Liverpool match last night. (Shouldn't have been too hard as he was in Birmingham!)
I've asked him to come round on Friday to help us to move furniture around as we're having the fireplace and sofa delivered on Saturday. And on Sunday, James and I are going Christmas shopping at the Metro Centre! I LOVE shopping with James, he's SO patient and we always end up having something yummy to eat! So, should be a good weekend!

VERY TIRED PUPPIES
Well, we've just come back from the puppies third walk of the day, and they are just lazing around quietly on the floor in the breakfastroom, halfheartedly chewing their hide bones and chewsticks.
They've had their evening grooming session. I seriously think that Charles could take this up professionally. Maybe when he retires he could open a Grooming Parlour - for dogs, of course. He does a really thorough job and the girls are really getting to enjoy those few minutes of pampering and, by doing it every day, their coats are tangle free and lovely. Lily seems to be getting a much thicker coat now and as for Rose, her long coat has a real sheen to it and she looks absolutely stunning!
Anyway, it's no good thinking you can settle down NOW girls. It's not bedtime till 9 o'clock so we need to keep you going until then.

BT SYNDICATE WINS EURO MILLIONS
£45 MILLION!!!
Apparently no one in the syndicate realised until this morning when someone checked the numbers.
Just imagine how they're feeling now!!!
I wonder how many of them will turn up for work tomorrow!!!

NOT MUCH...
...to report today, except for the fact that the puppies and I have been for ANOTHER walk - that's two this morning!
This time, however, we NEARLY had a crisis, when Rose managed to slip her collar. Fortunately we had just got back to our house when it happened, but I'm relieved it didn't occur when we were crossing the main road!
Lily is in the process of settling down for snooze number two - but Rose isn't!!! I, however, can only WISH I was!!

NEARLY TEN O'CLOCK ALREADY!
And the morning is galloping away!
The puppies have had a long walk this morning and actually managed to stay close to me for most of the time without pulling too much. Of course, they are now shattered and are having a sleep! Rose has her bottom in the bed and her head on the floor. She doesn't look at all comfortable, but is fast asleep! Lily's lying on her back, legs akimbo, in her preferred sleeping position.
James rang this morning from his hotel in Brum. He'd had a reasonable journey last night, getting there at about 10.30. He'd watched the Man U/Chelski game before setting off, but that was probably a good time to be traveling on a Sunday. (He wouldn't be impressed with the result though as, after NUFC obviously, he's a closet Man U fan - whoops, just let you out of the closet Jim!!)
Okay, it must be time for coffee and breakfast now. I'll be back later...

WOW
Just when I thought I was all alone on this blog I get TWO(!) comments on the Simon Cowell post!!! And one of those is spookily anonymous! Hmmm, who could it be?!
Of course, I know it's all done for TV and ratings, but it still incensed me that the man could be so openly two-faced. Clearly, he has no regard for his own credibility - but then again, he probably doesn't care.
And don't get me started on the wazzock that is Louis Walsh. Every week he seems to go to greater lengths to show what a total idiot he is, with his pathetic whinging and sniping.
Anyway, just an idea - but why don't the judges just butt out of the process next week and for the rest of the contest and let the public decide the whole thing?

SIMON COWELL
I have always rather liked Simon Cowell, but this evening he has just lost all credibility as far as I'm concerned. He could have got rid of the twins tonight, but instead went for the public vote, resulting in Lucy leaving and those infuriating brats staying.
I'm sorry - but after all his comments in previous weeks - Simon has shown himself to be a real hypocrite.
Grrrrrrrrrr!

Grrrrrrrrrr!
WELL THAT'S THAT THEN!
Another weekend whizzes past!
I've just had Helen on the phone and was trying to remember what we'd done over the weekend - and I really couldn't remember anything of any significance, which is really odd because we don't seem to have had a minutes peace or relaxation.
We didn't get to the beach today, but the girls went for a nice country walk with Charles and James this afternoon. Later we went out to Alnwick and got a few little Christmassy bits and had a look at some freestanding fireplaces because I've got a hankering for a fire with a hearth and a mantlepiece! Obviously, as we don't have a chimney or flue it has to be one of these freestanding ones, and as there is no gas in our village (apart from our puppies when they've had their tea) we can only have electric - but these new fires look pretty realistic with the added advantage of NO MESS!
When we first got married we lived in a tiny cottage in the middle of the Oxfordshire countryside. There was no central heating and the only warmth came from the fire in the tiny living room. Sometimes, in the really bad weather that swept through the Thames Valley in those days before Global Warming (!) we used to get snow drifts in the kitchen and the loo. I vividly remember having to clear about two inches of snow off the loo seat on one particularly bad occasion! And you try telling the kids of today that - and they won't believe you!!!!
Anyway, we had a coal fire and it was such a hassle trying to keep the wretched thing in all the time. It was also very dirty - especially the time we had the chimney fire and foolishly threw water on it, resulting in soot and smoke everywhere. So, I'm more than happy to be thinking of getting a fire that doesn't involve trekking to the coal house, cleaning the grate and using those foul smelling firelighters. Mind you it did make very good toast!!
Having looked at some fires in Alnwick, we decided to go with one we'd seen on the internet, so we've got that on order and it should come within the next fortnight. Charles is very doubtful about how I'm going to organise the furniture in the living room, but as I rather conceitedly said to him earlier, 'Have I got it wrong yet?' and he had to agree that I haven't, I'm sure there won't be a problem!

SUNDAY MORNING AGAIN
And a very wet one at that!
This is a bit of a shame as we were hoping to get the puppies back to the seaside for a long afternoon walk - but it may have faired up a bit by then. It's certainly beginning to feel much colder now though, so we may need to get those little Westie coats fairly soon.
James is coming over for lunch before he goes off to Birmingham. He's going with someone else from work, so at least they can travel together.
I need to go shopping before lunch just to get one or two things I forgot the other day - it's always the same isn't it, there's always SOMETHING you forget!
I tried to stay up to watch the highlights from the NUFC match but, now that we are a lowly Championship club, our matches aren't shown on MOTD, but in the programme that follows at midnight. By that time I'd turned into a pumpkin and needed to get to bed, so I might not get to see the goals now. It would appear that there was a fair bit of anti-Ashley chanting yesterday. Wish I'd been there - there would have been a bit more!!!

3 - 1
Shame we conceded, but sounds like a good game. I'll no doubt hear all about when Charles and James get home in about ten minutes.
Pasta sauce is cooking, garlic bread has just gone in the oven - smells great!

TODAY WOULD HAVE BEEN...
...my Dad's birthday.
I've been thinking about him a lot this week. One of the things I thought was that he would have really loved the puppies.
I've just rung Mum to let her know that I'm thinking about her too - and she seems fine. She wanted to know all about the pups and I was able to tell her, quite proudly, how well they are doing with their housetraining.
It'll be interesting to see how they get on without the big crate that has been their bed since they came to us. It has to go to make room for other furniture and the only time they REALLY use it now is at night, so hopefully, they'll adapt to using their little cosy beds and blankets instead. Anyway - we'll soon find out because I'm going to make the change during the week.
Well, Charles and James should be getting to ST JAMES'S PARK about now. I really hope it's a good game - and that we get all three points! C'MON TOON!!!!

OLD GIRLS!!!
Last night was actually very pleasant. There were only four of us, but we did talk about arranging a proper get together with others from the dim and distant past before too long.
We had a lovely time; catching up on what we're all doing now and reminiscing about school. Good food, wine and company!
I got back home to find that the puppies were waiting for me! It was waaay past their bedtime, but I didn't mind at all - it was lovely to have cuddles before they finally went down for the night. I think they were (and still ARE) a bit unsettled by having James in the house! They love being around him and don't want to miss a minute that he is here. Having said that, he has just left the house with Charles to go and help Christina - and the pups have INSTANTLY settled in their little bed for the sleep they SHOULD have had about two hours ago!!!
By the way, I used the 'George Formby' grill this morning for the first time to make sausage butties to set the boys up for the day - and it was really good. No mess, very quick and a slightly barbecued taste. I'm impressed!
Right, I've done James's laundry and noted the fact that he appears to have his entire wardrobe hanging in my utility room! The tree fern has been wrapped up for winter. Cleaning is done. Puppies are asleep. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO NOW???

SUDDENLY...
...the puppies appear to be very tired and lethargic! Funny that, I wonder if it has anything to do with all their antics this morning!
They're having a very quiet afternoon, very lazy and dozy.
Consequently I AM ALSO having a much more relaxed time this afternoon. Usually this is the beginning of crazy time, but maybe they got that out of the way before lunch. With luck, Charles should have an easy time looking after them while I'm out this evening.
Talking of this evening, I just need to put some finishing touches to the desserts. The mousses are done, topped with whipped cream and drizzled with melted white chocolate. I made individual pavlovas instead of a big one and they just need to be filled with raspberries, blueberries and cream just before I go out.
The problem is, we won't be eating until 7.30 at the earliest - and I'm ravenous RIGHT NOW! Hmmm, I can feel an attack of the munchies coming on - might go and see what's in the fridge!

THE WEEKEND
It's amazing how quickly they come round - although if you've been at work all week you may not feel the same!
We seem to have quite a busy weekend lined up. I'm out tonight at the Old Girls Knees Up (That's for those who've had their replacements done, obviously!) and James is coming to spend the night with his Old Mum and Dad (Not that he has a new Mum and Dad - I'm afraid he's stuck with us!)
Tomorrow morning Charles and James are helping Christina move out of her current house into another one in Fram - just a temporary measure until she decides where she wants to base herself.
And in the afternoon they are both going to...
...the Sportsdirect@St James'Park Stadium to watch the match!!!
I understand that the new name will be displayed in time for the match, but I bet it's heavily guarded, because I can see some serious defacing coming it's way. There's a lot of talk about protests before the game as well, so it should be an interesting afternoon - oh and there'll be some football to watch as well.
I suppose this means that I'm in charge of the puppies again - oh well, you can't win 'em all!!!
After that, I'm not sure if James is going to be here again or not, but I do know that he has to drive to Birmingham on Sunday afternoon because he's on a course on Monday and Tuesday.
If he's NOT here on Sunday morning, perhaps Charles and I will take the pups somewhere for a very long walk to tire them out! Or we could go to the pet superstore in Gateshead to get some nice puppy things.
Actually, now that I think about it, I personally don't appear to have a very busy weekend at all. In fact the only thing I'm doing is going out tonight. Hmmm, that doesn't seem right somehow!

WHERE'S THE NEAREST PLUGHOLE???!
Only joking - just!
(If you haven't read about my nightmare, you won't understand about the plughole and if you HAVE read it you probably think I'm being unnecessarily cruel - BUT YOU'RE NOT HERE AND I AM AND SO ARE THE PUPPIES FROM HELL!
Puppies are NOT sweet cuddly little things, they're messy and sharp and scratchy and naughty and bitey and poopy and wet. And they are all of these things at the same time - and in our case TWICE AS BAD!
I attribute most of their HORRENDOUSNESS to the fact that they had an extremely short sleep this morning and woke up long before they were ready. Since then it's been one long battle - with ME on the losing side all the time.
Of course, THEY have had great fun - 'You go that way, and I'll go the other way and she'll never be able to catch us!' and 'If she picks you up I'll jump up at her legs like a crazed thing, then when she puts you down and picks ME up, YOU do the same,' and 'When she tries to put us in the car, I'll climb in like a good girl and you try to run away down the drive' and 'While we're in the car, let's see if we can make the side of the crate collapse on top of us then we can howl so much that the RSPCA will come and investigate and make her give us even more treats.'
Having just discovered that the poopy smell that had been following me around was in fact coming from ME and that when I'd picked Lily up to clean her rear end of the yucky mess that covered it I inadvertently smeared it all over my clean top, I have to admit defeat!
Fortunately for them, the puppies have not only exhausted me, but themselves as well and are now sleeping the sleep of the just (?)
As for me, I would give anything to go off ON MY OWN for a while without having to worry about them - or indeed whether or not I'm walking around in a poop covered top!

NIGHTMARE
I had a really bad dream last night - the sort where you wake up in a cold sweat and wonder if it was real.
I don't often have nightmares and can rarely remember my dreams, but this was so vivid I can remember all the details.
It began when Charles and I had taken the girls to 'someplace'. The place was indistinct, but for some reason we put the girls into a shower room. What we hadn't noticed was that instead of a covered drain, this one had a big open plug hole, just big enough for a puppy to fall into.
And that is what happened.
We could hear Lily barking madly and went back to the shower room to find her peering down the plug hole - but there was no sign of Rose.
Of course, I had hysterics because it was obvious that she had disappeared into the depth of the drains and, somehow, I managed to squeeze myself, with Lily in my arms, down the plug hole and into the drains to search for her.
The awful bit (as if falling into the drains wasn't bad enough) was that when I looked down I could see a very limp Rose surrounded by lots of black scratching biting things that, on closer inspection, turned out to be miniature rats with wings.
The sense of panic at this point in the nightmare was tangible and I heaved myself (and Lily) up the plug hole to tell Charles what I had seen and that he needed to get down there quickly because I didn't know if Rose would survive.
CHARLES also managed to squeeze through the plug hole and the last I heard was him yelling, 'I'VE GOT HER...'
And then I woke up, so have absolutely no idea if she was safe or not.
After that I couldn't get back to sleep properly and, although I dozed, all I really wanted to do was to make sure that both puppies were okay!!!
I couldn't wait to get up this morning, where I found, thankfully, that both pups had survived the night completely unscathed!!!

I LOVE THIS TIME OF DAY
It's just gone 9 o'clock and the puppies are starting to wind down for the night. We've had a lovely evening with them - they've had one or two little scraps, but the usual really crazy time hasn't happened at all today. I think that might be due to the fact that I decided to take them for a walk in the late afternoon and it left them feeling really tired and used up a lot of the energy that they usually use during their mad hour.
They're settling down while I write and put themselves into their crate as soon as I mentioned 'bed time'.
On the housetraining front - which I haven't mentioned at all today - Rose gets 10/10 for not having any accidents at all for the last four days. Lily has had one completely successful day and on each of the other days has had one accident - but there have been extenuating circumstances on each of these occasions. Today she managed brilliantly until we foolishly let her walk through to the living room. She isn't normally allowed to do tis and I think the excitement was too much, resulting in a little puddle. But, all in all, I'm really pleased and think that the approach we are using is beginning to show results.
Once they've settled I might just have to try one of the chocolate mousses I've made for tomorrow. They still need some cream and decoration before they're properly ready, but I've added Tia Maria to my usual recipe to give them a mocca flavour and I couldn't possibly take them round to the Girls' Soiree unless I was sure they were edible!
(Rose is snoring now, so time for me to leave them to it!)

BONFIRE NIGHT
I wonder if there will be many fireworks tonight?
People don't seem to bother with their own so much these days and tend to go to organised displays. I would imagine there will be a few of these over the next couple of days.
I HAVE heard one or two whizz bangs but nothing that has disturbed the puppies too much yet.
I've never been a great one for fireworks. I think the horror of the potential casualties that result from them always made me extra cautious to the point of actively disliking them. I don't feel the same about pyrotechnic displays though - especially when they come at the end of a Take That concert and have the capacity to reduce me to tears!!
One thing I DO remember with great affection from my childhood, is the food that we used to have on Bonfire Night. Sausages (real ones, not those hot dog things that are probably made from dog food) and jacket potatoes dripping with butter and ginger parkin - yum yum!! That was the best bit of the night for me!
I suppose, like everything else, fireworks have become so common that much of the impact of November 5th has been diminished. They're at weddings, parties and most big celebrations. Perhaps we should have them at funerals and then we could say, 'So and so went out with a bang!!'
At the moment we're all sitting crammed into the little breakfast room, where Charles is on the floor giving the girls their evening grooming session. This must be heaven for Lily who adores any amount of fuss. However, when it comes to Roses's turn in a minute it'll be a different story as she will only be brushed under sufferance. It's a pity really as she has such a long coat and is the one who really needs it. She's just a bundle of fluff!

A RANTING RANT
Right - first of all, if you are a dog owner who happily leaves your pet while you go out to the shops or even to work, you may not understand the sentiment behind this rant.
BUT I'm still relatively new to puppy owning and when I set off to Morpeth at 9.30 this morning all I could think about, from the moment I pulled off the drive was, 'How quickly can I get back to the puppies?'
I had a shopping list for stuff for dessert tomorrow night and for the weekend supplies we will need as James is coming to stay for a couple of nights. (A mini-break in Fram no less!) I had also worked out that if I did something that resembled a sprint from Morrisons car park I could get to Dorothy Perkins and back in about five minutes, having purchased the most gorgeous pair of lacy boots, as advertised in this week's Grazia magazine. (Don't worry Charles - they only cost £45 - and they are the last word in gorgeousness, which is quite unusual for Dotty P)
So, by my reckoning I should only have had to leave the puppies for an hour and ten minutes. No problem!
EXCEPT - It took me fifteen of those precious minutes to get out of our village. Yep - the 'resorfacing' is really happening and the entire stretch of main road is dug up and therefore chaotic. It was like JCB gridlock out there and unfortunately I was following the bus, which couldn't go anywhere, even when it COULD go, if you see what I mean, BECAUSE THERE WAS NO ROOM.
At this point I need to say that to the best of my knowledge this must be about the fourth time in the last six years or so that the road has been 'resorfaced'. SO WHY DOES IT NEED DOING AGAIN? WHY DIDN'T YOU GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME?
That aside, before I'd even got past David's shop, I was already down on my time by 15 minutes, so wasn't overly happy, but then once I DID get on the main road I got stuck behind...
...THE GRITTING WAGON!
WHY ARE YOU OUT NOW? IT'S SUNNY AND WARM FOR GOD'S SAKE. GET OFF THE ROAD AND COME BACK AT MIDNIGHT IF YOU MUST - JUST GET OUT OF MY WAY - OR DRIVE A BIT FASTER THAN 20 MILES A DAY.
Then I noticed a black car behind me who kept flashing his lights. WHY? WHAT HAVE I DONE WRONG? IS IT BECAUSE I'M NOT OVERTAKING THIS GRITTING WAGON? HAVE I GOT MY INDICATOR ON? WHAT IN HEAVEN'S NAME IS WRONG WITH YOU?
When the black car overtook me, the driver even started gesticulating at me. WHAT THE...
...then I realised that the driver was in fact MY DAUGHTER WAVING AT ME!
By this time I was pretty tense and, once I'd eventually got past the gritter myself, I realised that my time had now been cut by about half an hour. 'At this rate I'll just have to turn round and go straight back', I thought.
But I carried on regardless until I got to the turn off for Morpeth where there are MORE ROADWORKS and I got stuck in another queue for ten minutes waiting to join the A1 for the twenty yards I need to be on it before I turn OFF it again!
I eventually pulled into the car park after a journey that normally takes 15 minutes, but had in fact taken 40!
Right, quick sprint to get my boots. Run run...
... forgot the ticket for the car park...
...run run back, get ticket, drop ticket, chase it round a bit, drop keys, get back to car, put ticket in window,
run, run ,run - must get those boots, run, run...
DOROTHY PERKINS IN MORPETH HAVEN'T GOT THEM IN STOCK YET!!!!!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
Run back to Morrisons.
Too many OLD PEOPLE in the way - MOVE YOU OLD PEOPLE, HAVEN'T YOU GOT PUPPIES AT HOME WAITING FOR YOU?
Get to Morrisons - GRRRRRRRRR - MORE OLD PEOPLE CLUTTERING UP THE AISLES and squeezing all the oranges and handpicking their potatoes - 'Ooooh I don't want THAT one it's a bit small' - WELL PUT IT BACK THEN!
Too many people in the way. Eventually I get to the checkout, only to discover I've forgotten castor sugar for the pavlova, so unload half the trolley - COS I'M NOT LOSING MY PLACE IN THIS QUEUE - run to find castor sugar, remember I've left handbag in trolley, run back for bag, run for sugar, get back to queue - NOTHING'S MOVED.
That's because the man who is trying to pay can't get his card to work! 'It's just a new one,' he said wiping it on his trousers, "Don't worry I've got plenty of time'.
Well YOU might have, BUT I HAVEN'T. My pups have probably burst out of their crate, having obviously grown to huge proportions and are devouring all the electric cables in the house, which is now in flames...
Eventually he gets his smear free card to work. "Gosh, are you still here?' one assistant asked him. YES HE IS BUT NOT FOR MUCH LONGER. SHIFT!!!!!
And now it's MY turn. "Would you like help with your packing?' WHY, Do I look OLD? I MIGHT HAVE BEEN IN HERE FOR A LONG TIME BUT IT SURELY HASN'T PUT THAT MANY YEARS ON ME! 'No thank you, it might be a struggle, but I'll manage somehow.'
And then the ever helpful checkout lady says, conspiratorially...
'Have you been watching X factor?'
WHAT????
To which I politely replied, 'Er yes'
Cashier: 'Who do you think is going to win?'
Me: 'Well I quite like Jamie Afro but...
Cashier: (Looks disapproving) 'On no! I've got £20 on Ollie and £10 on Joe and when I put it on the odds were...
drone drone drone
'And my husband said, you haven't put money on...'
drone drone drone
'And the twins are now at...'
OH FOR GOD'S SAKE SHUT UP AND PUT MY SHOPPING PAST THAT BARCODE THING AND THEN MAYBE YOU CAN GIVE ME THE ODDS ON ME GETTING OUT OF HERE BEFORE THE MAN BEHIND ME IN THE QUEUE MURDERS ME - HEY LISTEN MATE, I DIDN'T START THIS CONVERSATION - SHE DID!
Get out of shop, unload trolley, won't fit in boot, put heavy bag on passenger seat, take trolley back to trolley park.
'I'll give you £1 for that trolley before you put it away' said a little (old) woman.
'NO YOU WON'T, IT'S GOT MY SPECIAL MORRISON'S TOKEN IN IT AND YOU'RE NOT HAVING THAT'.
Start driving out of Morpeth and the car starts beeping at me. What the hell's THAT? Look around, red light flashing - SEAT BELT - but I've got it on. Then I realise that my very intelligent car thinks that the bag of shopping is in fact A PASSENGER WHO ISN'T WEARING A SEAT BELT! Throw bag of shopping on floor - oh hell, I forgot I put the eggs on the top...

Get out of Morpeth and back up the A697, where, of course I get stuck behind a lorry with a huge crane on the back, that I just KNOW is going to be needed up in Fram, so end up in slow moving traffic all the way to the outskirts of the village, where I sit at the lights for another 15 minutes, seething and imagining all sorts of puppy related horrors at home. You have to go 'in convoy' so have to wait for the convoy van to do a million point turn and eventually get round the corner, only to find I can't get home because the road is blocked by...
...JCBs AND THE CRANE THAT I'VE FOLLOWED ALL THE WAY HOME!
'GET THE CONVOY VAN TO SHOW YOU HOW TO DRIVE WITHOUT SNARLING THE ROAD UP COMPLETELY'.
Arrive home, turn off engine, pull on boots, get out of car, put keys in pocket, get them out again because the front door key is on there, put key in lock and tiptoe into house looking for signs of devastation and sniffing for the unmistakable scent of poop...
... only to find that the puppies were fast asleep and hadn't missed me one bit!!!!!!!!
